We are so proud that we were nominated, and shortlisted for the “Outstanding Community Impact” award at the 2025 EUSA Student Awards! ⭐️ Some of our members attended to represent the Widening Participation Medics Society on awards night!
Watching the awards and hearing the impact our society has had on so many truly inspires us to continue supporting, and growing the WP community. 🌎 👏
Our co-president Maha, was also nominated, and shortlisted for the “Heart of Edinburgh Award” coming runner up!! Both co-presidents Maha and Robyn, who started the WPM Society in 2022 have worked tirelessly to support and grow this amazing community. They are sadly graduating this year and will be greatly missed within the community!!

WHAT IMPACT DOES WIDENING PARTICIPATION IN MEDICINE HAVE ON THE MEDICAL WORKFORCE IN THE UK? 🩺
Currently, research is limited on subsequent follow up of widening participation students entering the medical workforce and how increasing diversity within the workforce impacts on clinical practise. We reviewed a pivotal article, scoping out key findings to shed light on this topic more.
Key findings included:
📝 WP initiatives enhance diversity within the medical profession, which may in turn benefit patient care.
📝 Recruitment to undersubscribed specialities may be enhanced.
📝 Previously underserved areas, vastly of economic deprivation are more appropriately served.
📝Ongoing inequalities exist. Specifically with regards to access to speciality training posts.
Overall, this review highlights the positive effects of WP but emphasises the need to address ongoing inequalities to ensure students from these backgrounds do not face additional barriers in their medical careers.
What do you think?
