🩺🚨 Did You Know?! Before Joseph Lister, surgeons didn’t even WASH THEIR HANDS before operating?! 🤯😱 Imagine going into surgery, and the doctor just… rolls up their sleeves and dives in. Yeah. That was real life. No gloves, no sterilization, nothing.

Thankfully, this University of Edinburgh alumnus changed everything. Lister wasn’t just a regular surgeon—he was THE guy who made modern surgery safe. 🏆✨

🔬 His BIGGEST Contributions to Surgery:
🔹 Antiseptic Surgery – He figured out that infections were caused by bacteria, not "bad air." Using carbolic acid (aka phenol), he started disinfecting surgical tools, wounds, and even the air! 🦠💨
🔹 Sterile Operating Theatres – Before Lister, hospitals were basically bacteria breeding grounds. He introduced clean instruments, hand-washing, and surgical masks! 🤲🧼
🔹 LISTERINE?! – Yep, the mouthwash brand is named after him. Why? Because his antiseptic methods led to better ways of killing bacteria (including bad breath, apparently 🤢).
🔹 Medical Gloves – His techniques laid the foundation for gloves, clean scrubs, and sterilized medical tools. Before this, doctors would just wipe their hands on their aprons (EW). 😬

🎓 His Edinburgh Days
Lister studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh in the 1850s, where he was inspired by James Syme, a leading surgeon of the time. His work was revolutionary, but not everyone believed him at first. Imagine trying to convince a bunch of old-school surgeons that their dirty hands were KILLING people. 🏥🚨

Today, every single hospital in the world follows Lister’s methods. A true game-changer. So, next time you use hand sanitizer, say a quiet “thank you” to Lister. 🙌
