Newsletter 39 - Friday 17th July 2026

As we reach the end of another exciting school year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on all that we have achieved together and to thank everyone who has played a part in making this year a special one. Looking back, it has been a year filled with learning, creativity, achievement and unforgettable memories. Our pupils have continued to impress us each day with their enthusiasm, resilience and determination, both in and out of the classroom.

This year has also been particularly memorable due to our very successful Estyn inspection. The inspection recognised many of the strengths of our school and was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the hard work, commitment and dedication of our pupils, staff, governors and families. We are incredibly proud of the positive outcome and of the way our whole school community came together to showcase all that makes Abercarn Primary such a special place to learn and grow.

We have enjoyed so many fantastic experiences together. From our wonderful Expressive Arts performances in the autumn term and the joy of our Christmas concerts, to exciting historical enactments that brought learning to life, our children have embraced every opportunity with confidence and enthusiasm. School trips have provided valuable experiences beyond the classroom, helping pupils to learn, explore and create lasting memories with their friends.

Sport has also played an important part in school life this year. Whether competing, supporting teammates or simply enjoying being active, our pupils have demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and teamwork. A big well done to our football and netball teams! Our Sports Days were a highlight of the summer term, filled with determination, laughter and community spirit.

The year concluded in true Abercarn Primary style with our summer BBQ, which brought pupils, families, staff and friends together to celebrate another successful year. It was wonderful to see our school community enjoying time together and creating even more special memories.

None of this would be possible without the incredible support of our families, governors and wider community. Thank you for your continued encouragement and commitment to our school. Your support helps us provide the very best experiences for our children, and we are truly grateful. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to those parents and carers who have taken the time throughout the year to send kind messages and words of appreciation. School life inevitably brings challenges and busy periods, and those thoughtful words of support mean a great deal to staff. They are always appreciated and help remind us of the strong partnership we share in supporting our children. I would also like to thank our dedicated staff, whose hard work, care and commitment ensure that our school remains a happy, nurturing and inspiring place for every child.

As we say goodbye to our Year 6 pupils, we do so with immense pride. They have grown into mature, hardworking and caring young people who have been excellent role models within our school community. We have watched them develop in confidence, independence and character, and we are confident that they will continue to succeed as they move on to secondary school. While we will miss them greatly, we know they are ready for the exciting opportunities and challenges ahead, and we wish each and every one of them every success for the future.

To those pupils and families who are leaving us this year, we send our very best wishes. While it is always difficult to say goodbye, we are incredibly proud of all that you have achieved during your time with us. We hope you leave with happy memories, lasting friendships and the confidence to embrace the exciting opportunities ahead. Wherever your next chapter takes you, please remember that you will always be part of the Abercarn Primary School family.

As we begin the summer holidays, I hope everyone has the opportunity to relax, spend time with loved ones and enjoy a well-earned break. We look forward to welcoming pupils and families back in the new academic year, ready for another exciting chapter together. WHAT’S NEW THIS WEEK

Summer BBQ / Fair
Thank you so much to everyone who attended our Summer BBQ – it was an enjoyable evening and lovely to see so many supporting the school. We raised approximately £1500!

Tiny T’s Wraparound
Tiny T’s will be taking over our wraparound provision from September. If there are any parents that have registered interest and have not completed a registration form – please collect a form from the school office.

Seesaw
We will be starting to change Seesaw from Thursday 16th July 2026 in readiness for September. Pupils will be in their new classes by the end of term ready for September 2026. Their current teacher will change to their new teacher and children will be in their new class. Please try to avoid sending messages on Thursday / Friday for their current teacher as they may not be seen.
You may want to download journals from this year (although hopefully journals will transfer over smoothly).
Year 6 children will be removed from Seesaw on Thursday 16th July 2026 and parents will need to download journals by Wednesday 15th July 2026 (only if you want to)

During the warmer weather can I please remind Parent/Carers to put sun cream on pupils before sending them to school? Please ensure that your child brings a bottle of water every day and wears a hat as necessary. Water is available for children during the school day although water bottles help with top ups and health and safety! The school will also encourage the children to sit in the shade out of direct sunlight for part of the lunch break.

End of Year Reports
End of Year reports will be sent out to parents at the start of next week. If you would like to discuss the report with the class teacher, please contact the school office who can arrange an appropriate time before the end of term.

Nursery and Reception 2026 - Important
There is a meeting for parents of children going into Reception class in September on Wednesday 8th July 2026 at 9.15. Miss Hodges and staff will hold a meeting in the school hall.

There is also a meeting for parents of children starting Nursery in September on Wednesday 8th July 2026 at 1230pm. Mrs Lewis will hold a meeting in Nursery.

Year 6 Safe Cycling
Starts on Monday – information sent on Seesaw and consent forms completed.

Schools Essential Grant
Eligible pupils in receipt of benefits-related Free School Meals will receive their School Essentials Grant payments automatically. Payments will be made in batches at the end of July and throughout August.

The weather is looking much cooler and even a little showery. We will aim to go ahead with sports days even if there are light showers.

Please make your way to the 3G pitch when the front gate is open – walk down the drive to the gate on the 3G pitch. A member of staff will guide you to an area on the pitch.
Please wear appropriate footwear and please bring a drink if it is hot! There is no shade on the pitch. First Aid for visitors is available at the school office.
Do not take photographs or videos as there are many children who do not have consent!

Don’t forget – school is closed this coming Monday and Tuesday – 22nd and 23rd June 2026 for INSET.

Car Park
Please can everyone who uses the car park outside school, please drive slowly and carefully. There are lots of children and adults walking during drop off and collection. Please drive slowly.

Her y Mis - Mis Mehefin
Diolch for completing last month's Her y Mis. We love the people we learned about and presented in our Welsh assembly, and we hope you enjoyed your prizes.

This month’s her y mis is baking something Welsh. This could be Welsh cakes, a cake with a Welsh decoration (think of the symbols of Wales - leeks, sheep, dragon, Mr Urdd, daffodil), decorated cookies or shaped cookies or cawl (a welsh soup).

This is to bring the family together to celebrate our Welshness, so please send in photos of the finished items and the process to show the family involvement as much as possible.
