Does your pet seem stiffer when walking or getting up?

Changes in movement can sometimes be an early sign of joint problems, particularly as pets get older or during colder weather.

When Lily came to Live Well Vets with recurring swelling around both of her hocks, we used our in-house CT scanner to investigate further.

The detailed imaging helped us diagnose arthritis in both hocks and gave our team the information needed to plan the right treatment for her, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.

Her owners have already started to notice an improvement. 💜

We’re opening the doors at Live Well Vets Whitchurch on Saturday 17 October, from 10am to 1pm, and we’d love you to pop in.

🐾 Fun Fact Friday

Did you know that young wild boar are nicknamed "humbugs"? Those bold, stripy coats aren't just adorable, they're nature's camouflage, helping piglets blend into the dappled light of the forest floor and stay hidden from predators. Nature is pretty clever when it comes to protecting its young!

🌿 Bonus fact: The Forest of Dean is home to the largest population of feral wild boar in England, with the most recent survey (March 2025) estimating around 583 individuals roaming the forest. That's a lot of stripey piglets out there!

One important note if you're planning on an adventure to the forest : please keep your distance and never approach wild boar, especially if you have a dog with you. Wild boar are naturally territorial and can become defensive very quickly, particularly mothers protecting their young. Dogs can easily trigger that response, putting both themselves and their owners at risk.

Admire them from afar, keep dogs on leads, and let the humbugs enjoy the forest in peace. 🐗

Today is Veterinary Receptionist Appreciation Day, created by the British Veterinary Receptionist Association (BVRA) and celebrated every year on 1st October.

Our reception team are the heartbeat of Live Well Vets. They are the first voice you hear when you call, the calm presence at the front desk when you are worried about your pet, and the quiet force keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes.

From booking appointments and chasing records to offering a reassuring word when things feel overwhelming, they do so much more than most people realise.

To our incredible reception team: Thank you. You show up every single day with warmth, patience and genuine care for every pet and owner who walks through our doors. We would be truly lost without you.

Cats have some very specific food risks that every owner should know about. 🐱⚠️

Some dangers are well known, but others are easier to overlook.

🧅 Onions and garlic – including concentrated forms such as powders and seasonings, which can be hidden in human foods.
☕ Caffeine – found in coffee, tea, energy drinks and some supplements.
🍺 Alcohol – even relatively small amounts can be dangerous.
🍫 Chocolate and cocoa – particularly concentrated or dark chocolate.
🥛 Milk isn't a poison, but... many adult cats don't digest lactose well, so dairy can cause digestive upset. It's a good reminder that not everything that's safe for us is suitable for cats.

🐱 Cats are smaller and have different metabolisms to dogs, meaning some substances can affect them very differently.

If your cat has eaten something potentially harmful, contact your vet promptly rather than waiting for symptoms to appear.
