New for November! Phonics & Early Maths at Avara 🌱

I'm really excited to be introducing our new Phonics & Early Maths sessions at Avara Outdoor Classroom!

As an early years specialist primary teacher, I'm passionate about making learning to read, write and understand maths fun, active and meaningful.

We'll be getting children moving, exploring, playing games and using natural materials to develop those all-important early skills. I want children to enjoy learning, build confidence and remember what they've learnt because they've actually experienced it!

Sessions are taught by me in a small, friendly group, so I can get to know each child and adapt activities to their individual needs.

Perfect for children just beginning their phonics and maths journey, or those who would benefit from building their confidence through a more practical approach, so I'm reluctant to give an age band because I know every child's different.

This week we’ve got an important job to do for the garden!

Our home ed group will be helping to price the pumpkins for the coffee morning sale. We’ll measure their size and weight, decide what to charge and write descriptions that make people want to take one home.

A real reason to use our maths and literacy skills, with plenty of discussion and ideas along the way, with the right support or extra challenge for each child in the group.

If you’ve been watching and wondering about joining us, this is a lovely week to give it a go!

Tuesday, 10am-12pm at Dunton Community Garden, near Biggleswade. For ages 4-11, with parents staying.

Two new classes are coming to Avara: Phonics & Early Maths and The Spanish Garden!

Think writing ‘mud’ in actual mud and games counting conkers, or learning how to chat about the weather in Spanish while we’re out planting 'patatas'!

We'll be giving those new sounds, words and numbers something real to connect to, while we’re busy having fun 😊

Digging, planting and tending the veg patch, going on little adventures around the garden and learning through plenty of games, songs, and getting stuck in.

And Spanish is for the grown-ups too, so you can learn alongside your children and try it out together at home with the free resources pack for each topic.

Both start in November, held at Dunton Community Garden, near Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. Who fancies joining us? Or know a family who’d enjoy this? Send it their way!

Avara Español! 

I'm really enjoying my 1:1 sessions where I've been teaching Spanish during our investigations around the garden and in our play!

Would you like to join us?

We'll be imagining we're in the Spanish countryside, growing our fruit and veg on our farm.

Parents and children will learn together through lots of games, exploring the garden and using Spanish for real life experiences.

There'll be absolutely no pressure to speak if you're shy. You can listen, understand and join in when you're ready.

Are you already thinking about what you’re going to do indoors with the little ones all day, or are you getting the wellies and brollies out? 😂

Tomorrow’s Avara Explorers under 5s session will be a fun one! We’ll be out in the garden, whatever the weather, playing, exploring and hopefully finding plenty of puddles along the way 💦

Get the waterproofs on and come and play at the garden 🌱 Sometimes the rainy days are the best ones 💚

I LOVE my job! Even if it means teaching children about dehydration, evaporation, and concentration through interpretive dance 🤣

This week we went poking around the plum trees to find out how on earth a plum turns into a prune.

Somehow this led us into dehydration, evaporation, water vapour and why prunes are so ridiculously sweet compared with plums, followed by cooking some tasty flapjacks!

The children were learning science, maths and literacy without really noticing they were doing any of it.

Honestly, if I could have designed my dream classroom when I became a teacher, it would’ve looked just like this 🥹💚

Today’s little Avara Explorers were very busy! 🍂🥣
We counted out the ingredients for our flapjacks, discovered that prunes are actually dried plums (and went to find them growing on our tree!), then helped collect leaves for our new bug hotel. 🐞
Obviously we then needed to make our own mud kitchen flapjacks too 😂
We finished the morning back at the barn, having lunch together and then the explorers took their cooking home ❤️
So much learning squeezed into one lovely morning, without it ever really feeling like 'learning' 🌱
