🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th

Today, we wear orange to remember the children who never came home, honour residential school Survivors, and recognize the strength and resilience of Indigenous communities.

The story behind the orange shirt began with Phyllis Webstad, a residential school Survivor from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation. When Phyllis was six years old, her grandmother gave her a beautiful new orange shirt to wear on her first day of school. When she arrived at the residential school, her clothing and belongings were taken from her, including her orange shirt, which she never saw again.

Phyllis’s story reminds us that the residential school system did not simply take children away from their families; it sought to strip them of their identity, culture, language, belongings, and connections to home.

Today, the orange shirt has become a symbol of remembrance, solidarity, and the commitment to ensure that Every Child Matters.

At Heritage Green, we believe that reconciliation begins with listening, learning, and creating spaces where children can grow with empathy, respect, and an understanding of truth.

Let orange be more than a colour we wear today. Let it be a promise we carry into every tomorrow. 🧡
