Okay, so there was this rescue in Indian Arm:
​This North Vancouver Captain got props for saving a life.
​Emma Elvin, who's a 23-year-old pro boat captain, got a shout-out from the Canadian Coast Guard because she saved an older guy who fell into the super cold water of Indian Arm.

​What happened:
​The guy: An older hiker got lost on the Baden Powell Trail and ended up by the water. He couldn't find a road, so he tried to kayak to Deep Cove in a kayak he found at an empty place. The kayak flipped, and he was in the water for over 30 minutes.

​How she found him: Elvin had just gotten home from work when she heard a grunt from her deck and saw the guy trying to stay afloat near a neighbor's dock.

​The Rescue:
​Elvin used her pro marine training to save him:
​Right away: She zoomed over in her 19-foot aluminum boat. The guy was too heavy and waterlogged to lift, so she tied a rope around him.

​Getting him out: She towed him to shore and literally pulled him onto the land.

​First Aid: She saw he was hypothermic, so she took off his wet clothes and wrapped him in blankets. She found out he was diabetic, so she used her boyfriend's glucose monitor to get him stable until the Coast Guard showed up.

​Aftermath & Recognition:
​The guy went to Lions Gate Hospital and got out later; he thanked Elvin personally and is doing fine now.
​Coast Guard Superintendent Tyler Brand gave Elvin a lot of credit, saying her actions were "above and beyond" and really showed her marine pro background.

​About Emma Elvin:
​Her background: Elvin grew up in a house on Indian Arm that you can only get to by boat, and she works for Prism Marine (water taxi) and C-Tow Marine Assistance.

​Her goals: She wants to join the Coast Guard someday.

​Her take on the industry: As a woman in a field mostly dominated by men (less than 2% of marine workers), she stresses how good and qualified she is, saying her Marine First Aid training helped her stay calm under pressure.

Incredible bravery and quick thinking! 👏 Emma Elvin, a 23-year-old professional boat captain, has been commended by the Canadian Coast Guard for saving a senior citizen from the freezing waters of Indian Arm. Her marine training and composure under pressure were truly life-saving. What an inspiration! ✨
