Recognized for her innovative leadership and contributions to children’s health care, Mary Jo Haddad, former President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids Foundation), will deliver the address at ’s Fall Convocation on Friday, Oct. 16.

During the ceremony, she will also be recognized with an honorary Doctor of Laws for the indelible mark she’s left on Canadian health care and beyond.

has taken a major step towards reconciliation and decolonization with the launch of its inaugural Indigenous Strategic Plan on Thursday, Oct. 1.

The plan envisions a Brock where Indigenous learners, faculty and staff thrive, Indigenous knowledges and worldviews are centred, and relationships with Indigenous communities are strengthened.

“For me, one of the most important principles throughout this process has been that Indigenous engagement cannot be understood simply as a series of initiatives,” says Sheila Cote-Meek, Brock’s Interim Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement. “It is fundamentally about relationships, which require time, reciprocity and trust. Our responsibility now is to ensure that the commitments we are celebrating today are visible in the everyday life of the University.”

Thank you to everyone in the community who joined us to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30, taking time to reflect on the history of the residential school system and its intergenerational impacts within First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities across the country. 🧡

Yesterday's events included two Every Child Matters lacrosse games at Alumni Field, hosted by the Hadiya'dagęnhahs - First Nations, Métis and Inuit Student Centre. Both games included drummers, an opening address followed by a land acknowledgement and the raising of the Every Child Matters Flag on the field, and half-time performances.

As observes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to listen, learn and reflect. Today, we honour Survivors, remember the children who never returned home and recognize the lasting impacts of the residential school system on Indigenous families and communities. 🧡

Throughout the month of September, the University community hosted several events and learning opportunities — from film screenings and bead and read sessions to an Every Child Matters flag raising and rock painting — where participants were able to listen and reflect.

“These opportunities matter because meaningful reconciliation is built through sustained learning and through the choices we then make in our everyday work, teaching, research and relationships,” said Sheila Cote-Meek, Brock’s Interim Vice-Provost, Indigenous Engagement.

How does teasing differ from bullying?

Associate Professor of Child and Youth Studies Naomi Andrews plans to use her 2026 Chancellor’s Chair for Research Excellence award to find out, exploring a relatively new research area: teasing among children and youth.

“By better understanding the differences between teasing that is harmful or playful, we will be able to better inform teachers, principals, parents and others who work with youth to recognize the subtle differences in these interactions,” says Andrews. “These insights can guide educational prevention and intervention strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of harmful peer experiences.”

Visitors to St. Catharines’ Lakeside Park are getting a glimpse of possible climate futures thanks to the fieldwork of the Empathy for Sustainability research team led by Julia Baird, Professor and Director of the Brock University Environmental Sustainability Research Centre - ESRC.

Anyone over the age of 18 is invited to visit Lakeside Park before the end of September to participate in data collection for Virtual Water Futures, a 15-minute experience that allows viewers to observe the park as it is today and then, using augmented reality (AR), see what the area might look like in the future as climate change causes rising lake levels and more frequent storm surges. 💧

In addition to ESRC researchers, students and affiliates, the team also includes hydroclimatologist Scott Steinschneider from Cornell University and collaborators from several community partners, including the City of St. Catharines.

The project is supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) as part of Baird’s 2025 Insight Grant “Building Empathy for Sustainable Water Futures.”

’s Department of Dramatic Arts (DART) is launching Canada’s first International Double Degree in Musical Theatre and Education in partnership with University of Portsmouth, U.K. 🎭

Blending courses in music and dramatic arts, the program will prepare students for their future careers with professional training in singing, movement and contemporary musical theatre creation.

Students will also collaborate on the development of a professional musical theatre production through Theatre Aquarius’ National Centre for New Musicals, a transformative force in both Canadian and international theatre.

Admissions are through a workshop-based invitational which includes a vocal audition.

Several programs were ranked among the best in the world in ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2026, including a Top 100 ranking for Tourism Management and a Top 200 ranking for Business Administration. 👏

Released earlier this month, the analysis places Brock’s tourism programming among the top three Canadian universities with comparable offerings, while the Business Administration program is tied for eighth place in Canada.

The rankings are determined based on the program’s international collaboration, research impact, world-class output, world-class faculty and high-quality research.

When Lindsay Taylor (BA ’19) saw an opportunity to help her community, she didn’t hesitate to dig in. Now, her sustainable stormwater management research has grown into a community-powered project creating on-the-ground impact in downtown St. Catharines. 💧🌱

The Earth Sciences master’s student gathered with University and community partners to celebrate the official launch of her rain garden study during a public event at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre - St. Catharines on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

The project has been supported by Niagara Community Foundation (NCF) and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, whose funding helped make installation of the rain gardens possible.

In addition to a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the green spaces, the event also unveiled Potential, an art installation created by Taylor in collaboration with volunteers from Brock’s Department of Earth Sciences Landscape Hydrology and Restoration Group, Niagara Green Herons and Taylor’s husband, Dorian Cannon.
