For the past 20 years, Kevin Turner Professor at Brock Geography and Tourism Studies, Parks Canada staff and officials from the Northern Yukon community have been tracking how climate change has vastly impacted Canada’s North.

Tundra grasslands are being replaced by shrubs. Permafrost is thawing at an accelerated rate. Lakes are draining more than in the past. River and lake shorelines are eroding more quickly. And fires are burning within and beyond the boreal treeline.

“Northern regions experience amplified responses to climate change, and our data provides important insight regarding how these important landscapes are responding,” says Turner. “The data also serves as a valuable reference when evaluating whether the results of future surveys and samples are similar or if landscape changes are continuing to accelerate.”

Turner’s research is funded by a 2016 and a 2023 grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, Polar Knowledge Canada, and 's Indigenous Research Grant. Learn more ➡️ https://loom.ly/fBFo4oQ

A vibrant display of hibiscuses takes centre stage at the entrance to , blooming at the heart of Suzanne Rochon-Burnett Circle. The long-established plants are putting on an impressive show this summer, adding a splash of colour to the campus landscape maintained by Brock’s Grounds Services team across more than 162 hectares (400 acres).

With a wealth of experience under their belts and a proven track record of success, 10 accomplished business alumni have come together to raise awareness of what they’ve deemed a worthwhile investment: their alma mater.

The powerhouse group of high-achieving graduates, including leaders from national and global companies, is putting their support and business prowess behind the next generation of Goodman School of Business - Brock University grads.

Together, they’ve founded the initiative, which aims to elevate the Goodman brand, amplify the School’s engaged ambassador network and grow investment in a transformational capital fund to support the future of business education at Brock.

With a goal of raising $2 million this year and more than $765,000 already secured, their impact is being felt through scholarships, student competition team support, food insecurity initiatives and alumni programming.

Goodman alumni investing in Brock’s next generation of business leaders — and calling on grads to do the same

While some people may find summer stifling, those living with multiple sclerosis tend to suffer in hot environments more than the average person, says Georgia Charachousou.

“Symptoms get worse with MS heat sensitivity,” says the PhD in Applied Health Sciences student. “People with MS feel much more fatigued than you or I might in the heat. They may also experience blurred vision, confusion and less co-ordination in their hands when temperatures rise.”

Research to explore why people with MS suffer more in heat

The Cyclones are recruiting new riders for next month’s The Big Move Cancer Ride, organized by the Niagara Health Foundation in support of the Walker Family Cancer Centre in St. Catharines.

Karl Thorp, who has captained the Cyclones since 2010, is encouraging faculty, staff, students and alumni to join the Brock team for its 18th annual ride on Sunday, Sept. 13 for the Big Move’s 25-, 50- and 75-kilometre rides as well as the 14-km Fun Ride.

“I have known people who have directly benefited from getting treatment from the hospital here, which enabled them to lean on the strength and support from nearby family and friends without having to travel great distances,” Thorp said. “Every donation, no matter how small, is important.”

The Cyclones have raised more than $250,000 in the past 17 rides, earning Brock’s team a spot on the Elite Peddlers tier of the event’s Platinum Peddlers Club. Learn more ➡️ https://loom.ly/rxRgsPs

Brock Cyclones adding riders to roster for Big Move Cancer Ride

This summer has been about more than gaining work experience for students — it has been about building confidence and preparing for their careers while making a difference in the lives of others.

Those experiences were made possible by the federal government’s Canada Summer Jobs program, which supported several meaningful employment opportunities at Brock that aligned with both students’ career goals and the University’s strategic priorities.

Six students worked in key roles in Recruitment, the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation, Student Life and Success, Summer Camps and Co-op, Career and Experiential Education.
