In his Convocation address last week, Computer Science prof Ali Emami spoke about graduation coming with a range of emotions.
While there is joy, pride and excitement, the experience itself can also feel “anticlimactic” as graduates come to the realization that this chapter of their lives is over and begin to ponder what comes next, he said.
Emami encouraged the newest grads to reframe that uncertainty as anticipation — remembering that while this milestone is worth celebrating, it is only the first of many more to come.

Large language models are a powerful form of artificial intelligence that are revolutionizing the way we interact with information.
On Friday, Nov. 1, professor Ali Emami be giving a talk at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre - St. Catharines that will address some of the benefits, limitations and ethical challenges of LLMs.
"Without getting too deep into the math and computer science of artificial intelligence, I aim to educate and inform attendees so you truly understand how these LLMs work," says Prof Emami.
"I hope you leave my talk with new knowledge about artificial intelligence and new perspective of how technology is impacting society and vice-versa."

2018 Physics Nobel Prize winner Donna Strickland was at Brock University last week to give a free community talk about ultrafast and high-intensity lasers.
As part of her visit, Dr. Strickland met with Associate Professor of Chemistry Jianbo Gao, who gave her a tour of his Ultrafast Photophysics of Quantum Materials Lab and shared some of the advancements in his own ultrafast laser research.
