She is an accomplished singer/songwriter, and obtained her Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance (Honours) from Western University. Breanne is an RCM Certified teacher, and is also a member of ORMTA (Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association) and NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing). She has been teaching for nearly 10 years, and it has always been a dream of hers to operate her own Vocal Studio. Breanne's students have been accepted to University and College music programs throughout Ontario, and have been featured on popular TV shows such as 'The Next Star', and 'Canada's Got Talent'. An avid performer, Breanne is a member of the New York Singer/Songwriter Circle in New York City, New York. She has been a featured performer at the Bitter End, a popular music venue located in Greenwich Village. She performs regularly throughout Southern Ontario as a Soprano soloist, and an accomplished Singer/Songwriter. She has written over 400 songs to date. Not only does Breanne love teaching and performing, she also has a passion for conducting. She is currently the Music Director of Wesley United Church in Welland ON, and is the Choral Director for the Niagara Chapel Singers in St. Passionate about teaching, she believes in proper vocal technique and developing each student's unique craft - most of her students are also active singers/performers.

When Kristin joined The Honest Voice Co. this summer, I already knew she was going to be something special.

You do not need to train classically before you’re “allowed” to sing pop (a hill I will gladly die on!) 👀

Classical singing and contemporary commercial music (aka pop) are different styles with different sounds, expectations + technical demands.

And that’s a good thing!

Classical training can be incredibly valuable! Trust me, I would know - I love classical music (B.mus in voice performance from Western ✋) BUT.. if your goal is to sing pop, your training should also give you opportunities to explore the sounds, coordinations + stylistic choices that actually show up in pop music.

Think about Rihanna singing FourFiveSeconds. There’s attitude. Agitation. Annoyance! Speech-like phrasing. It sounds conversational, almost like she’s just talking to you on pitch.

That’s because style is part of the technique!!

Pop singers may need to explore things like:

✨ speech-like registration + phrasing
✨ chest-dominant and head-dominant mix/belt coordinations
✨ vowel modification
✨ dynamic shifts in vocal fold closure
✨ riffs + runs
✨ intentional breathiness, cry, twang, distortion or other FUN vocal colours (one of my faves 😍)
✨ finding THEIR sound instead of chasing one “correct” sound, or a “unified” sound

A lil reminder from your neighbourhood voice nerd 🤓☝️

You can learn about vocal folds and resonance and registration and airflow and ALLLLL the nerdy little voice things…

but pls do not accidentally science the joy out of singing 😭

Technique should give you MORE options. More freedom. More confidence to make weird af sounds. More ability to sing the songs you actually WANT to sing.

The goal was never to become really good at vocal exercises lol (ASK ME HOW I KNOW😬)

The goal is to SING WITH FREEDOM + HAPPINESS 🥹

Sustainability 🤝 joy

✨ TEACHER SPOTLIGHT ✨ Miss Madey 💛

Madey has been teaching with The Honest Voice Co. since 2021 and we are SO lucky to have her on faculty!

Currently finishing her final year of her Concurrent Education degree (with a focus on music) at Brock University, Madey thrives in teaching young singers ages 5–13. She truly has the magic touch with this age group, and fosters a warm, encouraging learning atmosphere. Madey’s singers can expect to feel supported, safe, and excited as they explore their vocal potential! 🎶

She has studied voice professionally for over 15 years with Breanne Rourke and Dr. Leanne Vida. In March 2021, Madey completed her Level 8 Voice certificate with the Royal Conservatory of Music with an outstanding mark of 90%, and was awarded First Class Honours with Distinction.

She completed her certification of training with Dr. Jenevora Williams in ‘Voice Growth + Change in Adolescents’ in December 2023.

Madey lives in her hometown of St. Catharines with her family: Mom, Dad, and two sisters (one of whom is a TWIN…no, they can’t read each other’s minds), three cats, and their mini-Aussie named Winnie. In addition to her vocal and teaching skills, she is adept at the cello and piano. When she’s not making music, you can find her knitting or playing video games.

Sometimes the answer to a high note is✨change the dang vowel✨

If you’re trying to sing the “ooo” in All I Wanted on that VERY RUDE high note exactly like you’d speak it, you might be making your job harder than it needs to be.

Here I’m taking “oo” /u/ and moving it toward “ew” /ju/ — adding that little “y” glide before settling into the vowel.

As pitch goes up, the acoustics change. We can’t always take a perfectly speech-like vowel and just… drag it higher and higher and hope for the best. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Think of Your vocal tract as a FILTER. Changing the position of your tongue, jaw and lips changes the resonances of that filter, and therefore which harmonics coming from the vocal folds get reinforced.

And /u/ is especially interesting 👀

Acoustic research on belting specifically identifies vowels like /u/ and /i/ as vowels that may require considerable modification as pitch rises when we’re trying to maintain certain belt-like acoustic strategies.

Vowel modification is an essential part of how singers negotiate pitch + vowel + the sound they actually want to make.

And while we’re here: tongue movement ≠ tongue tension guys!!! 👅

The tongue is a HUGE part of the vocal tract!! We don’t need it frozen forward and flat at all times. Different tongue shapes create different acoustic outcomes.

Instead of:
“Keep your tongue forward!!! 😤”

I’m much more interested in:
What tongue shape + vowel gets us the sound we actually want?

In this case, that tiny /u/ → /ju/ (“oo” → “ew”) adjustment gives this singer a much more workable pathway into the note without losing the pop/rock sound we’re after.

Your vowels are allowed to move.
Your tongue is allowed to move.
Acoustics, baby. 🤓🎤

And yes, we still work hard, perform, train, and challenge our singers!! 💪🎤🎶

Normalize 👏 flop 👏 singing 👏 in 👏 voice 👏 lessons 😎

One of my professional singers joked with me recently that her lessons are where she comes to do her “flop singing” 😂 (I diiiiied)

And honestly? YES QUEEN. Your voice lesson is not a performance (don’t we WISH!) You do not need to walk into the room and prove that you’re a good singer 💛 You don’t need every sound to be beautiful or perfectly polished or performance-ready!!

Sometimes we’re making weird af sounds. Sometimes we’re exaggerating something technically. Sometimes we try something and immediately go, “well THAT wasn’t it.” 😂

That’s part of the work!!

At The Honest Voice Co., we want you to explore. Get curious. Experiment. Throw stuff at the wall!

Our teachers will never tell you exactly how you should sound.

Our goal is for you to understand your voice well enough that you have CHOICES available to you — and can make those choices intentionally as an artist 🎤
