What if, instead of shutting down when conversations become overwhelming, we had a way to communicate that we need a moment, without walking away from ourselves?

This month, we’re highlighting Tessenie Mowatt-Hamblett, Registered Psychotherapist and founder of Psychotherapy with Tessenie, for her insight on the role of safe words in therapy.

Safe words aren’t about avoiding difficult emotions or conversations, they create space for regulation, reflection, and continued connection.

For many individuals, especially those navigating trauma, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm, having a safe word can be a reminder that pausing is not the same as giving up. It is an act of self-awareness and self-compassion.

What are some ways you communicate when you need a pause during difficult conversations?

We have kicked off our Spring/Summer planting and cooking workshops in partnership with Links for Greener Learning 🌱

The Roots to Replenish Planting Event brought together Black youth for a hands-on experience centered around sustainability, food systems, and environmental stewardship at Buchanan Community Garden.

From planting seedlings to meaningful conversations.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, planted with purpose, and helped make this gathering so impactful.

A special thank you to our partners, the workshop facilitator Bhavika
Vaghjian and supporters who continue to invest in youth-led environmental learning and community wellness.

We can’t wait to harvest our work and share it!

If you know Black and Indigenous youth who will benefit from this, share this with them and use the link in our bio to register!

Meet the Future Black Female Summer Intern Team

Meet the interns joining us across Programs!

Over the next few months, they’ll be working on projects, supporting our community, and bringing fresh ideas to the table.

Every summer, we bring on a group of sharp, driven students ready to learn, build, and lead. This year is no different.

Why it matters:

Our intern program is about giving emerging leaders hands-on experience, mentorship, and a network that lasts beyond the summer.

Give them a warm welcome in the comments 👇🏽

Black children are Canada’s children.

This isn’t just a statement. It’s a reminder of who we are responsible for, and who Canada is responsible for.

When Black youth thrive, communities thrive. When they’re supported with mentorship, safety, and opportunity, we all move forward.

At our recent Breaking the Cycle Conference, Day One keynote speaker Dr Natasha Henry-Dixon spoke on the importance of making sure Black Children/Students are seen and heard.

The conference was a huge success, and we’re deeply grateful to everyone who participated. This is just the beginning. We must keep having these conversations and turn them into action to create safer, more inclusive spaces for all children.

For many young Black youth, navigating barriers to access, the right summer role can open doors far beyond a single season.

Opportunities like this can be a game-changer, not just for gaining experience, but for building confidence, networks, and a clearer sense of what’s possible.

It’s about exposure, skill-building, and YOU stepping into spaces that shape YOUR future careers.

If YOU are a Black youth or YOU know one who’s ready to take that next step, this is the time to explore what’s out there and take action.

Apply and share with YOUR network!
