A lot of people coming into the fire service are learning in a totally new environment, and that's where VR can thrive.

Virtual Reality gives someone the chance to live through a scenario themselves while still going through it as a crew.

They're performing the tasks, talking to each other, and making real decisions in the moment. And most importantly; allowing you to fail in a safe environment.

New tech like virtual reality in the fire service always gets some skepticism, and Captain J. Harris leaned right into it.

At San Diego Fire-Rescue, his team kept the pilot small and focused, brought instructors in on how the training was built, and set it up so nobody felt judged for messing up while they learned.

They set clear benchmarks and encouraged people to just try.

Once crews saw how it applied to their actual job, the hesitation went away.

"I thought it (VR) was the most ridiculous thing."

Captain John Truong - 7 years on Brampton Fire - said that about VR firefighter training the first time he heard about it.

Then he put on a headset.

We asked John to walk through XpertVR's full residential structure-fire scenario on camera. Full kit on the truck - radio, SCBA, nozzle, flashlight, thermal imaging camera, halligan, ladder. He covers what each tool does in the sim, when a firefighter reaches for it on a real call, and how the platform supports the kind of mental reps that turn a procedural checklist into muscle memory.

The second half is a live instructor debrief - the same coaching a training officer would deliver after a real evolution.

"The radio is $3,000 equipment. Most firefighters don't practice with it - they're told not to damage it."

Reducing turnover doesn’t just save costs (up to $50K per employee), it strengthens local talent pipelines and keeps valuable skills in our communities.

This morning, our team joined Nventure and the Northumberland Manufacturers’ Association (NMA) at Venture13 in Cobourg for the official launch of Vfactory — Canada’s first Virtual Reality recruitment and retention platform for the manufacturing sector.

Supported by Ontario’s Skills Development Fund, Vfactory helps manufacturers strengthen retention by giving job seekers a realistic preview of factory environments before day one, simulating conditions like noise, repetition, and safety procedures to build understanding and confidence.

We were proud to present the impact of VR in workforce development and share a preview video of the Vfactory simulation, with pilot programs beginning next month.

For the live demo, we showcased our XpertFire simulation, a VR training system also being deployed through the Skills Development Fund to prepare Ontario firefighters for advanced incident command roles.

The event, featuring remarks from Mayor Lucas Cleveland, Wendy Curtis (Nventure), Arnaud Raymond (NMA), and Minister David Piccini, was filled with energy, curiosity, and plenty of smiles from those who tried VR for the first time.

A huge thank-you to everyone who made today’s launch a success. Excited to continue building the future of training and recruitment through immersive technology!
