A career change can happen when you least expect it.

After spending 15 years as a CNC machine operator, Diego saw the industry slow down following the tariffs and realized it was time to explore a new path. The inspiration came from someone he already trusted - a gas fitter who regularly serviced his home. After seeing the opportunities available in the HVAC industry, he recommended that Diego pursue his Gas Technician certification at the Niagara & Halton Skilled Trades Academy.

Diego recently completed his Gas Technician 3 training and has written his Gas Technician 3 licensing exam. Now, he's already moved on to the next step and has started his Gas Technician 2 program, continuing to build the skills and knowledge needed for his new career in the skilled trades.

From day one, he's been impressed with both the instructors and the learning environment.

🔥 Training at the highest level starts with hands-on experience. 🔥

Our current Gas Technician 1 (G1) class at our Niagara Campus is staying busy with a variety of hands-on training activities under the guidance of G1 Instructor Lloyd.

Students are building Honeywell 7800 burner control boards, working on dedicated training boards to strengthen their wiring and troubleshooting skills, and assisting with the installation of an 850,000 BTUH Raypak commercial boiler. They're also getting to see our new oil burner fired up, giving them valuable exposure to the equipment and systems they'll encounter in the field.

The Gas Technician 1 (G1) licence is the highest level of gas technician certification in Ontario and allows individuals to work on natural gas and propane equipment over 400,000 Btuh. From large commercial boilers to complex burner management systems, G1 technicians have the qualifications to work on equipment used in schools, hospitals, manufacturing facilities, and other large commercial and industrial buildings.

Sometimes the biggest career changes start with a simple recommendation.

After working in IT as a QA Tester at Bell, Anderson decided he was ready for a new challenge. Friends encouraged him to explore the skilled trades, and after researching numerous HVAC schools, he chose the Niagara & Halton Skilled Trades Academy because of our hands-on training and accelerated G3/G2 combined program, giving him the opportunity to build practical skills and enter the workforce sooner.

Now enrolled in our combined G3/G2 program at the Niagara Campus, Anderson is taking the first steps toward a brand-new career in HVAC.

Although he had never worked with metal, piping, or HVAC equipment before, he's embraced the learning experience and enjoys the challenge of developing an entirely new skillset.

"The instructors are amazing. They'll explain things as many times as you need until you understand, and I've learned so much already. The shop is excellent, and I'm really enjoying the hands-on training."

One of the things that drew Anderson to HVAC was the variety of career paths available. With so many opportunities in the industry, he's excited to continue learning, gain experience, and discover which direction best suits him as his career grows.

🔧 Our Niagara G3 students are already putting their skills to work!

Just two weeks into the program, our current Gas Technician 3 class is making incredible progress and building the foundation for successful careers in the skilled trades.

In the classroom, Shop Manager Dustin is teaching students how to read and understand schematics, while connecting that knowledge to real-world sequence of operations they'll encounter in the field.

Out in the shop, students are getting hands-on experience using pipe threaders, building confidence with basic electrical circuits, and working on practical projects that reinforce what they're learning every day.

It's exciting to watch these future gas technicians grow in both knowledge and confidence as they take the first steps toward rewarding careers.
