This 21-day international field course will focus on how natural and cultural heritage sites are presented and interpreted at some of the world’s premier heritage destinations in England. From our bases at Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex (15 days) and London (6 days), we will explore and analyse a diverse cross-section of cultural and natural heritage destinations in both regions, focusing both on the destinations themselves, and how they are managed, curated, presented and interpreted.

The Herstmonceux Castle Estate is an exceptional restored Grade I listed 15th-century medieval castle in East Sussex which will serve as both our classroom and study site. At the Castle, we will examine historical, ecological, and architectural interpretation approaches, and undertake an applied digital heritage interpretation project on the Castle estate.

Our stay will also feature field excursions to multiple heritage locations in East Sussex, including historic National Trust and English Heritage properties, literary and cultural tour destinations, hiking and cycle tour sites, ecological remediation sites, and re-wilding initiatives underway at several nearby destinations in the Southeast.

Our 5-night / 6-day field session in London will focus on multiple iconic museums, galleries, historic neighbourhoods, and other world-class venues relevant to heritage interpretation in the city.

Officials from the community have been working with Brock University Professor of Geography and Tourism Studies Kevin Turner’s research lab and Parks Canada staff to track measurements that quantify these changes in Van Tat, commonly known as Old Crow Flats, a 15,000-square-kilometre watershed north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Beaufort Sea.

This week's pizza party was a full house! Students painted tote bags while eating lunch and listening to some music.

Last week we welcomed 12 of our amazing alumni back to campus to speak to our students 🎉

🗣 The evening included both structured and unstructured networking opportunities for students, staff, faculty and alumni to connect. Over 40 students learned about a variety of careers in both tourism and geography spanning from economic development and destination marketing to transportation planning and environmental compliance.
