Today’s a good day to recognize the people under the helmets.
Happy International Firefighters Day to crews everywhere, but we’ll admit, we’re a little biased. HPFFA’s got some of the best!
Proud to serve this city, proud of the work being done every day and proud to stand alongside a group that always shows up when it matters.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of St. John’s Local 1075 President, Jimmy O’Toole who passed away from complications of occupational cancer.
Jimmy’s commitment to his members and his community did not go unnoticed and his impact will be felt for years to come.
We are thinking of his family, friends and the entire Local 1075 brotherhood and sisterhood during this time. We stand with you and send our heartfelt condolences.
St. John's Fire Fighters
The IAFF is saddened by the death of St. John’s Local 1075 President Jimmy O’Toole, who died from complications of occupational cancer.
A fire fighter since 2001 and a union leader for over a decade, Jimmy was fiercely committed to the health and safety of members across Newfoundland and Labrador and throughout Canada.
Long before his own cancer diagnosis in 2018, he helped lead the effort to establish presumptive coverage for 11 occupational cancers in Newfoundland and Labrador. Even as he faced cancer himself, Jimmy helped build on that progress by expanding presumptive coverage to include eight more cancers in 2022.
That advocacy continued through his service on the IAFF’s Occupational Health and Safety Committee, where he represented members across eastern Canada and helped shape the union’s work on occupational cancer.
Jimmy is survived by his wife, Crystal, and their sons, Gavin and Ryan. We keep them – and all who knew and loved Jimmy – in our prayers.

At this year’s IAFF Canadian Legislative Conference, our executives had the opportunity to meet with several Members of Parliament to discuss key priorities impacting the fire service.
Conversations focused on lithium-ion battery incidents, updates to the Memorial Grant Program for fallen firefighter families and strengthening Canada’s airport firefighting regulations.
Thank you to each of you for taking the time to meet and engage. Looking forward to continuing these important discussions.
