Ontario schools are not built for extreme heat 🌡️🥵

Across the province, students, teachers, and education workers are learning and working in classrooms with no air conditioning, windows that do not open, and aging infrastructure that has been neglected for years.

This is what underfunding looks like!

As the Ontario NDP introduces a bill to combat heat in schools, the government must recognize that our publicly funded education system needs real investment, not more neglect.

In 2018, the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation (MIRR) announced that Ontario has designated the first full week of November as Treaties Recognition Week.

A treaty is a legally binding nation-to-nation agreement – for example, Indigenous Nations and Crown – that sets out the rights, responsibilities and relationships between the Indigenous Nations of these lands, and the federal and provincial governments on behalf of the Crown.

As Indigenous Peoples and Canadians, we are all treaty people. We have a shared responsibility to learn about a complex history that will inform today’s relationships. Learning about the history of treaties and their original intent helps everyone to identify those parts of the relationships that require attention for healing and restoration.

I'm sure you're all hearing the rhetoric from the Education Minister about boards wasting funds that should go to the classroom. Global news just confirmed that the appointed supervisors for boards that have been taken over make more than Directors of Education - and far more than our measly trustee honorarium. Who's wasting money now?

Take a moment to share appreciation with our school bus drivers this week!

Each year, during the third full week of October, we celebrate School Bus Safety Week and Bus Driver Appreciation Day. This week is a special time to acknowledge and commend the exceptional efforts of the dedicated school bus drivers of Hamilton-Wentworth Student Transportation Services (HWSTS).

We encourage students and families to express gratitude to bus drivers for their dedication to safely transporting students to and from school. A simple “Thank You” can show support for their hard work and commitment today on School Bus Driver Appreciation Day.
