I can't imagine life without mirrors. It doesn't do the work of change, but it shows me where I'm at, and that is crucial to know. I can decide to change what I see in the mirror or simply enjoy what it offers to me and walk away in confidence. But I always get back to it to check again.

As a guardian of many budding singers and a singer myself, I can't emphasize enough the importance of having a mirror in our toolkit to help us grow and stay confident in our journey with our voices. Regularly video recording ourselves singing is a game changer. Often times I find myself in a rut trying to explain to my students what they need to work on, and in such moments, simply showing them what their current state of progress proves to be a light bulb moment.

So, dear parents, caretakers, aunts, uncles, do your budding artists a favor and make them a repository/journal of their journey. Video Record Every Song they sing! It will tell your loved one that you're serious about their growth and that you celebrate them even in their imperfections. It will be worth it!

This incident took me by surprise. I wasn't doing too well when I was doing this online session with a student of mine. As I was transitioning to an exercise, the student interrupted and asked if I could sing the song we had been working on. I wasn't sure why but she wanted me to sing the whole song. Without probing too much I happily complied. As I sang the song, I could hear her singing along. My heart lit up and I soaked in those moments. I felt the joy of singing that often grips me but this time it was special because I was sharing it in real time with a child far away from me. While I'm pretty sure she enjoyed it, I was the one more in need of that freeing experience. And I am so grateful she asked me!

I tried ChatGPT for this one! Read on...

"Picture this: As the week unfolds, I eagerly await the moment when my students step into my studio. Their energy speaks volumes, a vibrant symphony of dedication and progress echoing through the room. Yet, amidst the triumph, lies a challenge - the sporadic nature of student preparation. But fear not, for I am armed with an arsenal of innovative tools to combat this foe!

Enter the Practice Logs, simple yet dynamic, like guiding stars in the dark sky of musical growth. These logs serve as beacons, illuminating the path to mastery and providing structure to their practice routine.

Ah, but wait, there's more! Behold, the mighty Files to Support Practice, wielded like a shield against the onslaught of uncertainty. With these resources at their fingertips, my students are empowered to conquer any obstacle, leaving behind the weight of doubt and embracing the journey with newfound confidence.

And let us not forget the cornerstone of it all - fun! For what is learning without joy? Like a magician wielding a wand, I sprinkle every lesson with the enchanting essence of enjoyment, transforming mundane exercises into exhilarating adventures.

So, dear friend, as you ponder the secrets of effective teaching, remember this: with practice logs as your compass, supportive files as your armor, and fun as your guiding principle, you shall navigate the turbulent seas of education with grace and triumph!"

So much goes on in singing! Breaking down the learning process and focusing on one element at a time and often repetitively is the most effective way to progress. And one of the exciting aspects of giving lessons is to see how this learning journey varies from child to child - in both group and individual formats!

Founded in 2019, "Sing and Soar with Rebecca" is my passion project, where I've connected with around 100 children through individual and group sessions. Drawing from my experiences in numerous worship bands and formal training from the Kodaly Music Institute (Boston), Music Together, and Contemporary Voice Training Academy (John Henny), I focus on creating enriching experiences for young musicians. Join me in this musical adventure, where passion meets training, and young voices are empowered to soar. Let's create a harmonious space for your children to express themselves through the joy of singing!

Here's a glimpse from a session I had today.. as I let my student choose how she wanted the lesson to span out, I found her engrossed in her practicing her sight singing skills (yes I allowed her to go on mute and practice, 'in' the lesson ).. It was not what I had planned for her today and I'm so glad it went the way it did! Student - driven sessions are just powerful!

It's been a looong time since I made some noise here! So much has changed since my last post but some things are here to stay. I've finally resumed lessons both online and offline! And hence, I felt it quite appropriate to start with some basic guidelines on 'Practice'. Because PRACTICE IS WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS (well, mostly). I've listed the major tips that I try to help my students with. More on each of them later. But, do you know any good ones I'm missing? Oh, and as parents of students or students yourselves, do you find practice challenging?
