The Great Eucalyptus & Peppermint Debate with Kids 🤔

When it comes to Eucalyptus and Peppermint, safety matters—especially with children! These recommendations are based on clinical safety studies 😉, and as aromatherapists, our goal is always to help, not harm.

🔹 Why be cautious?
Some essential oils, including Eucalyptus (1,8-cineole) and Peppermint (menthol), can pose respiratory and neurological risks for young children.

🔹 Keeping risk low ⬇️ = Long-term safe use!
By using essential oils safely and appropriately, we ensure we can enjoy their benefits for years to come.

💡 Start low—there’s never a need to begin at the high end of a dilution chart. And remember, those tiny humans grow fast, and so do their essential oil options! But for now, let’s keep them safe 😁.

💧 Dilution Matters! 💧

Different applications require different dilutions for effective and safe essential oil use. The skin on your face 🧖‍♀️ is delicate and needs a lower concentration, while dermal wounds in less sensitive areas may benefit from a slightly higher dilution.

Proper dilution reduces the risk of sensitization 😉—which is crucial because we want to enjoy essential oils as a long-term health tool. Sensitization could mean losing the ability to use oils altogether 😯! Also, not all oils are safe for dermal use, and we cover which ones to avoid in our online certification courses 😊.

These dilution ranges serve as guidelines, but we always recommend starting at the lowest effective percentage. You might be surprised—pain relief can be achieved with just 1% dilution, and some issues need only 0.5%!

Sometimes Age Matters 🤷‍♀️

👶 Infants and 👵 the elderly have thinner skin, meaning they need less essential oil to achieve similar benefits. Plus, tiny new humans are at a higher risk of sensitization, so extra care is essential.

Did you know? About 90% of a neat (undiluted) essential oil application evaporates—meaning you may only be absorbing 1/10th of what you’re using. That’s a lot of wasted oil 💧 and money 😳! Plus, neat use increases the risk of sensitization and skin irritation.

✨ Why dilute? ✨
When you mix essential oils with a carrier oil, your body absorbs 90% or more of the essential oil—maximizing benefits and minimizing risks 😊. Plus, the carrier oil brings its own therapeutic properties, making your blend even more intentional and effective.

💡 Start lower than you think!
Even if a chart suggests starting at 2%, you can begin at 0.5% or 1%—especially when considering age or specific concerns.

🔥 Myth Buster Alert! 🔥

Natural Doesn’t Always Mean Safe 😱

It’s a common misconception 🧐 that just because essential oils come from plants 🌿, they must be safe to use in any way. But that’s not true!

The safety of essential oils depends on many factors, including:
👶🧒 Age
🤒 Health conditions
💊 Medications & supplements
🎯 Purpose of use
💧 Dilution & application method

💡 That’s why dilution matters! 💡
To make things easier, we’ve created a dilution chart 👇 to help you get started with safe and effective essential oil use.

🌍 If you follow international aromatherapy standards, you may notice our chart is a little different. That’s because Canada 🇨🇦 has unique or***ce reducer standards compared to other countries.

How to Use This Chart:

💧 The drops represent essential oils.
🧴 The bottle size at the bottom tells you how much carrier oil to use.
🛡️ We always recommend starting as low as possible!

💬 Any questions? Let us know what you think of our chart! 🤩

🚫 MYTH: “Essential oils are natural, they can’t interfere with medications.”

This is one of the most medically important myths we cover in our certification. 🏥

The truth: some essential oils contain compounds that can meaningfully interact with prescription medications.

A few examples:
⚠️ Oils high in methyl salicylate (like wintergreen) can potentiate anticoagulants like warfarin
⚠️ Certain citrus oils can change how your liver metabolizes medications
⚠️ Some oils may interact with antidepressants or thyroid medications
⚠️ Camphor-rich oils can lower the seizure threshold for people on certain medications

This doesn’t mean oils and medications can never mix. It means a qualified aromatherapist knows what to check before making any recommendation.
A full health history, including current medications, is a non-negotiable part of any professional intake. Learning exactly how to do that intake is part of what you’ll study in our Clinical Aromatherapy Certification. 🌿

Save this and share it with someone on multiple medications who uses essential oils. 📌
