A note to dancers:

- You have come to a dance to dance, so do so! Ask that lady to dance! And ladies, if you feel comfortable, ask that man. And not just with someone who you feel is appropriate to dance with - with everyone! That new person may not know all the basics yet, but how else can they learn if we don't dance with them? The person who is more advanced? Try them out too! They used to be at the you are at one time. Teachers: if you are staying, get out there too! Don't act snobby staying away from the dance floor or only dancing with the best dancers. Get out there on the floor with everyone!

- Dance students: just because you took lessons with so-in-so doesn't mean you can't dance with someone who hasn't. Enjoy dancing with a different lead or follow! Leads, this will be a test that you can truly lead - not just preform a set "routine" that your teacher taught. Follows, this will test if you can truly follow. Close your eyes sometimes and don't back lead.

- Smile when you dance! I know you are concentrating, but nothing makes a dance more pleasant than knowing that your lead or follow is enjoying the opportunity to get on the dance floor.

- Teachers: teach to your lowest level student. Once you have done that, then you can teach to the higher levels. Nothing says discouragement more than not being able to understand what is going on or going too quickly through something.

- Teachers: If you are teaching a group lesson prior to a dance, make sure it is something the students can use and practice throughout the dance afterwards. Nothing is more frustrating to a student than learning something and not being able to practice what was learned - both in the class and afterwards. Make sure the repetition is long enough for the students to grasp it - not as long as you need it to be. If it can't be practiced, it wasn't worth the hour wasted on teaching it.

- Students: It's always good to practice what you learned. Leads try it on every follow you dance with, who were in the class or not, at least once through your dance with them. This will help you continue to remember what you were taught. Follows: You saw, or danced with, the people who were at the class. Pick them out occasionally to dance with so you can practice your part. It is allowed to ask your partner to practice that move/move combination!

- When leading check out what your follow is wearing. That foot catch may not be appropriate if the follow has a dress or skirt on. Those multitude of spins might not be appropriate if it shows off body parts that are not supposed to be exposed.

- Have fun! If you don't like the way someone leads or follows, just dance with them once that night. Who knows, they may have learned a thing or two since the last time you danced with them. If you cannot do something or have an issue with something you know they do, let them know! They don't know unless you tell them! Just be nice about it.
