In the Montessori Casa classroom, writing develops naturally through purposeful, hands-on experiences that prepare both the mind and the hand. ✨
The journey begins with the Sandpaper Letters, where children trace cursive letters while hearing their sounds, engaging touch, movement, sight, and sound together. Children then strengthen hand control through chalkboard work, moving from large arm movements to smaller, refined motions.
Before handwriting comfortably on paper, children use the Large and Small Moveable Alphabets to build words and express ideas independently.
Montessori introduces cursive first because it follows the natural flow of the hand. The connected movements support fluid writing, reduce letter reversals, and feel more comfortable for young children than repeatedly lifting the pencil for print.
At this stage, spelling is not the focus — children write using the phonetic sounds they hear in words. Over time, they are introduced to phonograms, puzzle/sight words, and as reading and writing confidence grows, spelling develops alongside it.
Interestingly, once children master cursive, print usually comes very easily afterward, as they already understand letter formation, spacing, and written expression.
Montessori writing is not rushed — it is carefully prepared, joyful, and deeply connected to the child’s development. ✏️
