McMaster Library's Maps, Data, GIS Centre supports the geographic, geospatial, and research data needs of students, staff and faculty at McMaster University. It provides researchers with access to a wide range of maps, geospatial and social science data sets, as well as resources and support for managing research data. Located within the Centre, The Lloyd Reeds Map Collection was started more than
60 years ago by McMaster Geography Professor Lloyd George Reeds and today consists of more than 130,000 paper maps, 18,000 air photos and 3,000 atlases. The Collection also contains thousands of historical maps, many of which have been digitized and made available online in order to support research worldwide. The Centre hosts a flexible classroom with SmartBoard that seats up to 40 students and converts quickly to a study area with tables when not in use, as well as PC workstations with specialized cartographic and statistical software. Stereoscopes, planimeters and opisometers can also be obtained for use with maps and air photos in the Map Collection. Members of the general public are welcome, however, some resources and services may be limited to McMaster affiliates only.
