Margaret’s Legacy & our new Learning Centre advances Holocaust and antisemitism education for the next generation. What is Margaret's Legacy? Get Involved!
Exploring intergenerational inheritance, identity & resilience to foster deeper understanding and dialogue. Margaret’s Legacy dedicated to continuously re-envisioning how we teach the Holocaust and antisemitism to the next generation. Through a values-based lens we explore intergenerational inheritance and how history continues to shape identity, memory, resilience and lived experience across gene
rations. Through programs, resources, community engagement, and now our new Holocaust & Advocacy Learning Centre, we aim to support deeper understanding across backgrounds and culture while sparking more helpful and meaningful conversations. How We Started
Margaret’s Legacy was born in 2008 out of a single question from Danna Horwood’s 11-year-old daughter who was curious about her family’s Holocaust history. Danna was motivated to preserve her grandparents’ story through a documentary that her own young children could understand and learn from. What started as a personal Holocaust education project quickly became something far greater. The film started reaching and inspiring thousands of young people across North America, sparking powerful conversations about antisemitism, resilience, and what it means to stand up to hate. The documentary, Margaret and Arthur’s Story, chronicles the Weiszes’ experiences during WWII, their escape from Hungary to Canada and their new life in Hamilton. Told through the eyes of living Weisz descendants, this documentary addresses the themes of courage, survival and love, and educates youth about the need for honesty, curiosity and kindness in our world. The Next Chapter of Margaret's Legacy
Margaret’s Legacy continues its core Holocaust education work through the The Margaret's Legacy Holocaust Learning and Jewish advocacy Centre in collaboration with the Hamilton Jewish Federation. At the same time, our team’s focus has shifted toward supporting the social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of the next generation. As world Jewry experiences heightened antisemitism and hate, many of us have been noticing reactions in our minds and bodies that feel all too familiar. This is because our inheritance goes far deeper than eye colour and personality traits. We inherit beliefs, fears, defenses, traumas, and unfinished stories that shape who we percieve ourselves to be and how we live our lives. This next chapter of Margaret’s Legacy, beginning with the release of Danna's Memoir, invites us to explore our inner world with compassion. To understand the stories that have shaped us, recognizing that healing is always possible. My Dearest Children | Danna Horwood's Memoir
Written as thought provoking letters to her children, My Dearest Children is a new memoir with engaging stories spanning nearly one hundred years of family history, from pre Holocaust to the present day. It blends together themes of courage, survival, identity, motherhood, grief, legacy and the fierce belief that healing is always possible. Danna brilliantly weaves in pop culture, current events and evidence-based sources throughout her personal narrative to help achieve greater emotional depth, a sense of personal connection with readers and to help provide inspiration for the next generation. Danna's greatest wish is that her memoir will inspire others to share their own inspirational stories. A few years ago, we published a blog series called #LegacyInspiration that encouraged community members to share stories from their own lives about individuals who made a lasting impact on them. Those stories were thoughtful, honest, and unexpectedly powerful. As this book launches, we would like to bring the series back. If there is someone in your life who influenced you, who pushed you, supported you, challenged you, or shaped the way you think, we encourage you to write about it and share it with us. It doesn’t need to be about the Holocaust. It doesn’t need to be about a grandparent. It can be about anyone who made a huge difference in your life. FYI this can be a very meaningful project for middle school and high school teachers! We are working on the development of a writers workshop that can help support individuals, groups or schools in producing meaningful, introspective and transformative essays. We’re also exploring the idea of creating a space in our Learning Centre to feature some of the stories that come in the coming months. This concept is still in early stages, but it feels like a natural extension of this work. We encourage you to send your story to [email protected] . We won’t be able to publish or feature every piece that is sent to us, but we will read them, and hope to respond within a few weeks.

Writing My Dearest Children has been deeply meaningful, but also emotionally intense. One of the biggest lessons of this journey has been learning that caring for others also means learning how to care for myself.
For that reason, I’ll be stepping back from social media a little more during this season. Please know this does not mean I don’t want to hear from you. Your messages, stories, emails and encouragement have meant more to me than I can express.
My daughter Sari and my communications lead, Rebecca, will be helping manage messages and comments on social media while keeping me connected to meaningful conversations and opportunities. If you want to reach me personally I’m still checking emails 😉
Thank you all for walking this journey with me so thoughtfully. 🤍🤍🤍

Mother’s Day has felt very different for me these last few years.
Since losing my dad, I find myself holding onto my mom much tighter. Appreciating her more than ever. Every day I become more in awe of her strength and the quiet ways she carries pain while still showing up fully for the people she loves.
The day before my book launch, my uncle Sheldon, my mom’s brother, who I grew up very close with, passed away. I truly didn’t expect my mother to come to the launch that night. I would have completely understood if she couldn’t. My mother walked in stoic and proud, exactly as she always does. Fully present. Fully there for me while carrying her own grief.
The next day we stood together again, this time at the funeral and shiva, sharing stories and mourning someone we loved so deeply.
Loss has a way of making us hold on tighter to the people who are still here. I’m grateful for my mom and the three incredible humans who made me a mother and continue helping me grow every single day.
Sending love today to those celebrating, grieving, longing, healing, and quietly mothering themselves and others in ways the world may never fully see. ❤️

Would love your opinion…
You may have noticed that there are two different covers. If you did, wow! Impressive. You are incredibly attentive to detail lol.
About 6 weeks ago we sent out ARCs (advance reader copies) to a bunch of people and we hadn’t yet had the cover photoshoot. We used an art mockup as a temporary solution and it ended up sparking a little team debate.
Half of us loved the ARC cover and the other half of our team is obsessed with the new cover we decided to use for the first edition.
So this is our quasi beta test:
So curious… Which cover do you like better?
