No surprise here that the star student from my last challenge ended our work together with this message.

She bought in and put in the work and got rewarded for it. In the beginning the results were slow. She got super impatient with the program. I kept telling her to relax and be patient and next thing you know the weight just fell right off.

6 people did the 8 week challenge and we wrapped up with a total of 113lbs lost. That’s like pretty friggin amazing ya know.

Nothing fancy about it. Actually it’s the exact opposite. I know what works. You know what works. It’s just hard to stick to it cause it’s kinda boring

Never ran more than 4 miles uninterrupted in my life. Tonight I decided to break that record. Why? Cause I had nothing better to do. Oh and because I signed up for a doozy of a race next year. My whole life has been filled with short distance events hockey, sprinting and handball. So why not at 42 try to flip the script and see if you can get some distance running in….as long as my knee holds up. Damn thing.

Where do you find your motivation?

Simple answer…I don’t find it. It’s all in how you look at it.

Let’s think about our daily life outside of the gym and eating good.

Example - Your job.

If you wake up every single morning excited to go to work and it’s not even a bother then stop reading here.

Ok now that nobody has left because let’s be serious ain’t no one love their job that much. So you wake up probably quite a few times and think “f**k not again today. Why can’t I just have a day off. Why can’t I just win the lottery” then you do your morning routine and drag your ass out the door and show up to work and put in a half assed 8-10 hour day and drag your ass home and go to bed only to do the same thing again the next day. Or maybe the next day is a little easier cause it’s closer to the weekend.

This is exactly how you should be handling your fitness and nutrition life. You aren’t always going to want to go to the gym, you aren’t always going to want to pick the best things to eat and you aren’t always going to give 150% in either aspect. But like a job you need to just fu***ng do it day in and day out. You will have amazing days. You will have poor days. As long as you do it every day you will get the results you want.

If you have ever worked out of a camp before you know just how hard it can be to eat good. That’s why the ‘camp 20’ is a real thing.

2 of your daily meals are from a buffet. How many people have ever left a buffet and said to themselves “damn I didn’t eat a lot. We should stop somewhere for drive thru”?

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that number is likely zero. Even a nasty buffet will have people over indulging.

A few of the things I have learned to do is when the staff is dishing up tell them “half scoop” or “just a small portion”. Usually I find vegetables near the front so I ask for a few heavier helpings there. It covers the bulk of the plate and as I progress down the line the less room for other poorer options the better. “Sir would you like a bowl for this option?” A quick no thank you and I am on my way to sit and eat. Trust me it is hard when you have so many options. A lot of days I want to ask for 2 plates heaping with food. But I know better.

Next is the dreaded dessert buffet. The camp I mainly work in has 2 doors, one of them passes right past all the cookies and pastries. It always seems to be the one that is closest to my bunk(I swear the camp is trying to sabatoge me!!), so the obvious plan is to just take the long way. Bonus points for getting extra steps in I guess.

Anyways these are just some of the things someone with my experiences can help with for that working person. Plus if you think I could be in camp looking over your shoulder judging you….you just never ever know!

Consistent.

Easy word to say.

Harder word to spell.

Hardest word to follow.

It’s not secret that the best way to be successful is to just stay consistent through and through. However the brain, life and temptation will forever be your biggest obstacles. Don’t be so hard on yourself, you aren’t alone.

In fact the easiest thing to be consistent in is just doing the best you can in the moment.

If you’re going to do something might as well go full send….amirite?!?! Never trail ran before and even after perusing the race details and being warned at least 100 times throughout the site that ‘it is the hardest thing you will ever do’ I still decided to hell with it. If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.

I mean whats the worst that’s gonna happen? Aside from heart failure, being eaten by a bear or cougar, falling off a mountain and plunging to my death, losing a limb due to injury followed by months long battle with infection. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

What does fishing do to your brain?

Fishing requires lots of focus and awareness. This takes your mind off internal conflict and stress, similar to meditation. As a result, it helps to reduce anxiety, fight off depression, and promote relaxation. Studies have shown that fishing lowers your cortisol levels (otherwise known as the stress hormone).
