May the 4th - International Firefighters’ Day is a time where the world’s community can recognize and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible. It is also a day in which current and past firefighters can be thanked for their contributions.
This week children learned about firefighters and today we had a special visitor - Tessa's dad - a real Firefighter! We learned about his duties and equipment! We are greatful to share these moments !

Pepper Germs Experiment

This week we are learning about our health. Now is a great time to teach children why washing our hands is so important! They can see exactly how soap works by repelling the germs in the water.

What you'll need:
-Shallow bowls or plates
-Water or milk (we used milk)
-Pepper
-Liquid soap

Step 1

Talk to your children about germs and ask them if they know why it’s important to wash their hands.

Step 2

Fill one of your bowl/plate with water or milk and sprinkle pepper across the surface of the water/milk As you do this explain that in the bowl the pepper represents the germs.

Step 3

Ask your child to dip their finger in the bowl. Ask them if they noticed that the germs moved. The black pepper will stick to their finger tip. Ask the child to look at their finger. Ask them if there are germs on it?

Step 4

Ask your child ‘what should we do when there are germs on our fingers?’, and have them dip their finger in the soap.

Step 5

Ask the child to dip their finger back into the bowl with the pepper. The pepper will magically move away from the soapy finger. Ask the child if they noticed the germs move.
