So proud of these students!
Their No Idling Campaign earned them a nomination from the Alberta Council for Environmental Education to travel to Edmonton as one of twenty schools chosen to show 150 ways schools show climate leadership in Alberta. They are showcasing their work today and attending leadership sessions at the Earth Day Celebration with the Minister of Education.

Program sustainability is an indicator of the 'stickiness' of an initiative. This year, the holiday light campaign was requested by the students and then spread out to three other locations. Think of all the families who now know to recycle lights to recover the copper inside and reuse the rubber.
Students worked today using the lights as math manipulatives.
They each picked a question of their own to answer. Some wanted to know if they were all broken and plugged them in to test, then kept track. Some measured length, some counted bulbs. Some looked at patterns of colours on strings, and some kept track of how many colours and how many of each colour. Multiple classes across grade levels worked together. Next week, we'll recycle them and donate the $ to an environmental charity.

The holidays are over. Recycle your broken strings of lights at four locations in Calgary until January 24:
Chinook Park School, Henry Wise Wood School, Chief Justice Milvain School or the CBE Education Centre. Together, we can create a big impact!

Happy September and welcome back to school! Part of Project Engage is learning to love and care for our local place. Our 3/4's were explorers, observers and scientists in the courtyard today. After a few sketching warm-ups, they each drew a tree as they see it, not as they think a tree should look.

Welcome back to school! September is our one year anniversary with the metal bin. We celebrated by emptying our 8th bin, diverting 14, 860 lbs of metal. How is that for collective impact?

Empowering student voice to create change is the essence of Project Engage. These signs are a result of the Eco Club's initiatives to care for our local place. Hard to argue with their message. We just got them at the end of school but look for them outside in September...

One last hurrah to celebrate the work and support of the entire school community! This went up on the school board website.

Chinook Park School Creates Community Through Music - News Centre - CBE
The music was heard from over a block away as parents, students, and community members joined Chinook Park School in June to cap off a year-long celebration of sound and the school’s “Project Engage: Living our Lives for a Sustainable Future.” The event included pop up performances, a street festiv....

This week, we emptied our 7th metal bin since September bringing us to a total of 11 340 lbs of metal that we have recycled as a community. How's that for impact? Our students are taking it a step further and reminding the driver to stop idling and turn his truck off!
