Yesterday was convocation for our SAPL graduates 🥳🎓

The day started with familiar traditions (like our staircase photo!) and built toward the excitement of watching students cross the stage. There was a real sense of momentum throughout the day, knowing what it took to get to that moment.

Congratulations to this year’s graduates. We’re proud to celebrate this milestone with you!

These moments have become part of the SAPL experience.

Year after year, graduating students gather for the stairwell photo - one final moment together that captures the energy, pride, and sense of accomplishment at the end of their journey 🎓

These throwback photos reflect that shared tradition across so many graduating classes.

Today, that moment continues in our new downtown campus, connecting past and present in a powerful way.

Tomorrow, they cross the stage ✨ Congratulations to our 2026 graduates!

Downtown Calgary, experienced through sound, movement, and atmosphere.

In our Master of Architecture (MArch) program, students in a Senior Research Studio taught by Dan Hapton explored the city through film-based research, following north–south transects across the downtown core. This project by Michael de Haan captures the built environment through ambient sound and everyday activity, offering a direct reading of urban life.

Without narration or added music, the film emphasizes how architecture is encountered in real time.

A cinematic interpretation of downtown Calgary.

In our Master of Architecture (MArch) program, students in a Senior Research Studio taught by Dan Hapton explored the city through north–south transects, using film as a method of design research. This project by Christian Icuspit layers movement, space, and instrumental sound to construct a new reading of the built environment.

Developed in collaboration with filmmaker Guillaume Carlier of Kino Sum, the studio encouraged students to approach architecture through storytelling and moving images.

We recently welcomed the Mayor of Halifax () to our downtown campus for a tour of SAPL, led by our Dean, John Brown.

With members from Halifax and the team, the visit brought together perspectives from across the country - highlighting how our work connects to cities, communities, and the future of urban design.

Thank you for the visit and discussion!

Last week, our landscape architecture faculty member Dr. Douglas Robb led an international group of wildfire researchers and designers to Waterton Lakes National Park for fieldwork connected to Pyro-Mobilities: Communities, Ecologies, and Landscapes on the Move.

The visit focused on landscapes affected by the 2017 Kenow Fire and examined how fire continues to influence ecological recovery, park management, and design practice in Canada’s Mountain West. Through site visits, field observation, drawing, and conversations with Parks Canada staff and local Knowledge Keepers, the team explored what it means to design for coexistence with wildfire.

Funded through a Transdisciplinary Connector Grant, the project considers how communities, ecologies, and landscapes are adapting and reorganizing in response to a changing climate.

We’re pleased to see Dr. Sneha Jain’s research featured in a recent University of Calgary story on how our homes can better support health and well-being.

An assistant professor in our School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, Dr. Jain is leading a transdisciplinary project that examines how indoor environments influence our daily lives. Her work focuses on elements like daylight, air quality, temperature, and noise, and how they shape comfort, stress, sleep, and overall health.

By bringing together researchers and partners across the university, industry, and the City of Calgary, this project aims to generate locally grounded insights that can inform future design practices and policy decisions.
