Meet Miss Lizzie!

Lizzie is currently working towards her Bachelor of Child Studies degree at Mount Royal University. She chose this career because she is very passionate about supporting children with exceptional needs, meeting challenging behaviours with curiosity, empathy, and connection, and ultimately aims to inspire kindness. In her free time, Lizzie enjoys being in nature; camping, snowboarding and hiking are some of her favourite hobbies.

When you were younger, what was your favourite sensory experience?
“Children immerse themselves in sensory experiences because these activities encompass action and interaction. Sensory explorations provide vital discoveries about the children themselves and the world they live in.” - Deb Curtis & Margie Carter

At Akidemy, we work hard to encourage children to use all senses by giving them everyday opportunities to experiment with various materials and textures. A favourite is our sensory play bins!

Hello Akidemy Families! For this fundraiser, we are reaching out for help in giving back to our community. As we are well into spring and some of us might be in the middle of spring cleaning and we wanted to use this fundraiser as a bit of a challenge. For this fundraiser we are working with the Samaritan Club of Calgary. Throughout the year, they take monetary donations to help citizens of Calgary get access to tools and resources that they can not afford alone. They also hold a Semi-Annual Super Sale where they sell donated goods from the community and use the proceeds to further allocate funds.

Did you know there are 7 stages of block play in early development? As children grow, their block play skills grow too! Children go from using blocks for sensory purposes to building huge castles or familiar buildings - such as the Calgary Tower.

Did you know play-based learning supports social and emotional development? It is embedded into our curriculum, The Akidemy Way! This holistic approach to education allows children to develop executive functioning skills (self-control, working memory, and mental flexibility) and self regulation tools by learning how to identify their emotions through play experiences. Children’s mental well-being is an essential part of our curriculum; play allows minds to flourish here at Akidemy.

Did you know all children have different temperaments? It is important to know what temperament your children/students are in order to provide the best quality of care you can. There are four different temperament styles: easy (flexible), difficult (feisty), slow-to-warm (fearful), and mixed (combination). Swipe through to learn more!

A picture is worth a thousand words. Children draw to communicate their ideas. As they advance through the stages of drawing, their messages/stories become more clear and meaningful. Throughout early development, children work through 4 stages of drawing. While we have labelled ages for each stage, keep in mind that all children develop at a different pace, & that is okay! Have you noticed these stages as your child has progressed in their drawing journey?
