It's a common misconception that getting started with investing, especially through traditional banks, means it's "free." I learned this firsthand at 19 when I unknowingly invested in an extremely expensive fund.

The reality is, investment fees can vary dramatically. While it's now possible to find investments with fees under 0.5%, some mutual funds can charge upwards of 2% annually. While these percentages may seem small, their impact over time is significant, potentially costing you hundreds of thousands of dollars. For instance, a 1.75% difference in fees on a $100,000 portfolio over 25 years could mean over $300,000 in saved fees if you manage it yourself.

I've always said the pink tax is in almost every facet of our society and here is another example of it. Summer Europe trips are popular and with them comes the inevitable price difference between men and women for the same experience: going on a trip.

I hear this mistake all the time. Don't let it happen to you!

Did you know there's a key difference between your marginal tax rate and your average tax rate?

Your marginal tax rate is the tax percentage you pay on the next dollar of income you earn. It's determined by the specific tax bracket your income falls into. For example, if you're in a 20% marginal tax bracket, every extra dollar you earn will have 20 cents go towards income tax.

On the other hand, your average tax rate is the total amount of income tax you pay divided by your total taxable income. This gives you an overall picture of the percentage of your income that goes to taxes. It's always lower than but rarely equal to your highest marginal tax rate because it factors in all the lower tax rates you paid on your initial portions of income.

Think of it this way: the marginal rate is about the future, what happens with each additional dollar. The average rate is about the past, a summary of what you've already paid.

Understanding both helps you make informed financial decisions in terms of how much cash you have on hand for tax season if you owe the CRA money.

We can always earn more money.

After all these years I still find myself saying it from time to time. An unexpected expense comes up, and then another one... and then another one.

The reality is, most millionaires have multiple streams of income exceeding 7. But not all of these sources require active work. Rather, they don't require any work at all aside from rebalancing from time to time. You can set it, forget it and watch your wealth accumulate year after year.

I see this time and time again (and statistically speaking, it's mostly women).

You need to invest your money in order to keep up with inflation. Sometimes putting it in a HISA (High Yield Savings Account) isn't enough for you to break even!

The reality is you are losing out on purchasing power by keeping all of your money in cash (even if it's in your TFSA!). It's so important to be investing on a consistent basis – while taking advantage of dollar cost averaging – so you make sure that your money is working for you!

I don't share this information to brag, but to paint a picture of what your life could also look like if you start taking control of your financial future.

When I started investing in 2012, I was working long night shifts at Epcor flushing fire hydrants (that's a story for another day) and I knew there had to be a better way to make my money work for me for the long term.

I started by investing $25 in a mutual fund (which I wouldn't recommend now) and the rest is history. I've hit CoastFIRE, which means if I don't contribute another dollar to my retirement that's okay – and I want this for you too!

It's not about travelling first class on the A380 (but it could be).

It's about living a life that is in alignment with what you are passionate about.
