Over the past few days, we had the opportunity to learn from inspiring Montessori leaders, connect with educators from around the world, and reflect deeply on how we can better serve children and families in our community. The theme “Joyful Journey” reminded us that Montessori is not just a method — it is a way of honoring the full potential of every child.

At TLCMA, we are committed to bringing authentic Montessori education, meaningful relationships, and a nurturing environment to the children and families we serve.

A 3-day Children Change the World Montessori Conference just wrapped up, and it has been incredibly inspiring weekend. Our team spent the weekend learning new approaches and deepening our understanding of how to better support and guide our children not just academically, but in their overall growth and development.

At The Learning Child Montessori Academy, a Montessori Childcare for 1-6 years old, learning math begins with the hands not worksheets. Here, a child is working with the Colored Bead Stair, a core Montessori math material that helps children truly understand numbers, not just memorize them.

What is the Colored Bead Stair for?

-Introduces numbers 1–9 in a concrete, hands-on way
-Allows children to see quantity through color and length
-Builds strong number sense, sequencing, and comparison skills
-Develops concentration, coordination, and independence
-Lays the foundation for addition, subtraction, and future abstract math

Many families are surprised to learn that Kindergarten is not required to enter Grade 1 in Alberta.

Here’s some helpful context as you plan your child’s next step:

✨ Montessori goes beyond traditional kindergarten
Many families choose to stay in a Montessori environment because it offers a more advanced, academically enriched curriculum, supporting reading, writing, mathematics, problem-solving, and independence beyond the traditional kindergarten scope.

👩‍🏫 Ministry of Education–aligned program
Our Kindergarten program for is delivered by Alberta-certified teachers and aligns with Ministry of Education expectations—while remaining rooted in Montessori philosophy.

⏰ Full-day learning (not just 2.5 hours)
Unlike the typical half-day kindergarten schedule, our program is full day, making it significantly more convenient and supportive for working families.

📌 What if minimum numbers aren’t met?
Even if we do not reach the minimum of 10 students required by the Ministry of Education to formally deliver kindergarten through our program:
✔️ We still strongly recommend enrolling
✔️ Tuition remains the same
✔️ Your child continues in a full-day Montessori program
✔️ No disruption to learning, routine, or care

Montessori provides continuity, depth, and independence, giving children a strong academic and social foundation as they transition confidently into Grade 1.

If your child is already enrolled with us, we kindly encourage you to hold off before making any decisions to withdraw. Staying the course allows your child to continue benefiting from the consistency, structure, and depth of the Montessori environment they are already thriving in. Your continued enrollment truly supports program stability and your child’s uninterrupted learning journey.

Montessori provides continuity, confidence, and independence, giving children a strong academic and social foundation as they transition confidently into Grade 1.
