What does it mean to spend years searching for a diagnosis, only to find that the system still does not fully understand your condition? For the University of Calgary's Kate Bourne, that question became a research career.

Now an MD PhD candidate in the University of Calgary's Cu***ng School of Medicine, Kate has lived with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, or POTS for two decades. POTs is an autonomic disorder that affects up to 450,000 Canadians, most of them females of childbearing age.

She recently helped lead a major follow up study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine that challenges the belief that POTS resolves on its own.

Her findings show how long patients can be affected and why assumptions need to change.

Story Saha, a recent graduate from the Schulich School of Engineering, participated in our Transformative Talent Internship (TTI) program to gain hands-on experience in a new environment. His role with the West Fraser Blue Ridge Lumbar division in rural Alberta allowed him to apply his technical skills while exploring a different pace of life and connecting with communities outside the city.

The experience gave him a broader perspective on how engineering contributes to industries that support Canada’s economy.

Crossing the stage is just the beginning. Every June, the University of Calgary celebrates thousands of graduate students stepping into careers, research and opportunities they built toward during their degree.

At UCalgary, 96 per cent of graduates secure employment within months of graduation, with four out of five working in fields directly related to their discipline.

And the city you study in matters too. Home to more major corporate head offices per capita than any other Canadian city, and a global ranking as the 5th most livable, it’s a city where graduate studies can take you further.

One summer internship changed everything for Story Saha.

The Schulich School of Engineering Master's student spent his summer inside one of Canada’s largest lumber operations through our Transformative Talent Internship program. At West Fraser’s Blue Ridge Lumber division, he worked on improving mill operations, tracking kiln performance and applying engineering concepts in real industrial environments.

What made the experience unforgettable was not only the technical work. Living in a small rural hamlet gave Story a completely different perspective on resilience, collaboration and community. The experience strengthened both his professional skills and personal confidence, eventually opening the door to a full time role with the company after his graduation next week.

Throwback Thursday! A look back at 2013 shows the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) in action, volunteering with the Good Food Box Program to help improve food access in Calgary.

Each box packed was part of a larger effort to support individuals and families through a sustainable, community driven model.

It is a clear example of how FGS extends its impact beyond research and into the community.
