Meet our 2025-2026 Sessional Instructor Teaching Award winners: Heather Ferg and Margot Engley!

Established in 2021, the Sessional Instructor Teaching Award honours a sessional instructor who demonstrates excellence in teaching, thoughtful curriculum contributions, and creativity in course design or delivery. This year, due to a tie, the award is presented to two recipients.

“I am sincerely touched by the nomination, let alone winning,” said Ferg. “Watching my students rise to the challenge and deliver sophisticated and insightful work is extremely rewarding and makes me optimistic about the future of the profession as a whole. Working through the fundamentals of the law with such talented and creative people makes me a better lawyer and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity the Faculty of Law has given me to contribute to their program.”

Engley, a sessional instructor for the Foreign Trained Lawyers Program (FTLP), echoed Ferg's excitement and gratitude. She is the first FTLP sessional instructor to win this award.

“I find the international students incredibly inspirational with their passion for the law and their work ethic. It’s a joy to teach them,” said Engley.

Meet our 2025-2026 Howard Tidswell Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence winner, Dr. Howard Kislowicz!

The Howard Tidswell Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence is awarded annually to an instructor at the law school who demonstrates outstanding teaching performance, methodology, and contribution to the curriculum. Nominations are submitted by students and faculty members.

“I am grateful to be part of a faculty with colleagues who care deeply about education and students who are so engaged in learning. I am truly touched that my students took the time to nominate me and that the committee chose me for the Howard Tidswell Memorial Award,” Kislowicz said.

“I love the energy and curiosity that my students bring to class. They are full of thoughts and questions, and I consider it a great privilege to participate in their learning and training. On the best days, a student will ask a question or make a contribution that allows me to rethink my own perspective. Then, I will get to chat with students one-on-one during office hours, clarify some challenging questions, and learn a little about who they are.”
