STAMBENE, Sam
August 15, 1966 – Calgary, Alberta
January 23, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta
Sam, beloved husband of Melina Stambene (nee Saraceni) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at the age of 52 years.
Sam touched the lives of many through his unfailing commitment to family, friends, students and youth whose lives he inspired. Sam lived life to the fullest; taking time to enjoy the important, but often simple things in life, whether it be appreciating a summit view atop a mountain while skiing, fishing, a home-cooked meal, making wine, or the simplicity of his daily espresso tradition with colleagues.
Sam’s deep-seeded Catholic faith permeated the way he engaged in life. He saw every person as God’s creation and treated everyone with compassion and respect. It was inevitable that teaching became his chosen profession.
Sam was blessed to grow up in a loving Italian family with his mother, father and two sisters. Here, he learned the value of family commitment and honouring family tradition. Sam loved to give his parents the gift of time. Sam met his best friend Melina when they were teenagers, who ultimately became his wife. This past summer they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in Italy where they visited their roots touring the country from North to South.Sam’s two children, Roman and Francis, were his greatest joy. When it came to play time, it was difficult to know who played harder, Sam or the boys. Sam was simply the proudest of fathers. His ultimate dream became reality when he coached his sons to provincial football championships at St. Francis High School.
Sam’s first Phys. Ed. teaching role began with Rocky View School Division where he developed George McDougall High School’s first football team. As a graduate of St. Francis High school, Sam returned to Calgary Catholic School District where he attended grade school as a student and began work at St. Francis High School in 2001.
Sam’s gift was his ability to maintain meaningful life-long relationships whether he encountered people in grade school, at work or in the community.
He will be eternally loved and remembered by his wife Melina, and two sons, Roman and Francis. He is survived by his parents, Rosario and Teresa, sisters Angela (Russ) and Adelina (Brent), mother-in-law Mirka (Aldo), sister-in-laws Reana and Elisé (Tony). He will be greatly missed by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (Corner of Northmount Drive & Northland Drive N.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the Church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
