In the busy day-to-day of teacher life, it’s easy to forget the context of each child’s experience.

When children come to school or a daycare center, what has just happened at home?

What is their experience like on the way to school?

The context surrounding each child impacts their behavior, mood, and ability to concentrate at school.

In the Montessori classroom, teachers make space for children to regulate and be ready to learn.

Dr. Montessori believed that when children use their hands, they learn. As she once said, “What the hand does, the mind remembers.”

In other words, doing is more important than sitting and listening.

In the example above, the child is counting beads to practice numbers from 11 to 19. Counting out the beads helps children connect numbers with quantities and build a concrete understanding of math concepts.

In Montessori classrooms, children use a variety of learning materials, spending most of their time working. For this reason, Montessori students don’t bring home lots of worksheets.

In this wonderful quote by Dr. Montessori, we are reminded that every child learns at their own pace.

Imagine you’re popping popcorn. Every kernel experiences the same conditions, the same heat, within the pot. But each kernel pops at a different time.

The same is true for children! You can’t rush them through their development.

They will learn each skill and achieve each milestone at the right time for them.

What makes a Montessori lesson special?

Every Montessori lesson begins with an invitation.

Children can decide whether or not to participate.

It’s the teacher's responsibility to make lessons exciting, engaging, and interesting for children.

When children choose to participate in a lesson, they’re more motivated and interested than when they’re forced to do it.

Plus, the teacher chooses the right moment for each lesson. This means the lesson is at the right skill level and in the child's area of interest.

Taking a moment to observe children in your early childhood classroom can help you create a more peaceful, effective, and happy classroom.

How?

If you notice a child struggling with something...take a moment to observe first. Do they really need help?

Sometimes, stepping in too soon can ruin the child’s concentration. A little bit of struggle is healthy and good for children! It builds not only concentration but also resilience.

Observing in the classroom also helps teachers identify areas that need change. For example, do children often run in the classroom? Perhaps a bigger area needs to be broken up with some furniture.

Or, perhaps children need more activities that involve gross motor skills.

Do you want to harness the power of observation in your classroom?
