This week’s Wordy Wednesday is all about advent, a perfect word for December and a perfect morphology lesson.

Prefix = toward
Root = come

Once students learn these pieces, they unlock a whole family of words: event, invent, prevent, convention.

Morphology really is the gift that keeps on giving. 🎁✨

December brings the perfect mix of spar𝗸𝗹𝗲, sprin𝗸𝗹𝗲, and twin𝗸𝗹𝗲, so it is the perfect month to explore syllables.

Once students learn to count back 3 letters, these endings become simple and satisfying to decode. This one is always a favourite during holiday lessons.

Why count back 3?

How it works:
Consonant-le forms its own syllable because the final acts as a syllable unit.
• the is silent
• the carries the syllable sound
• the consonant before joins it → making the final syllable

𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 to all of our U.S. families and friends. 🧡🤎
This week’s Wordy Wednesday looks at the word Mayflower and the spelling patterns inside it.

We focused on the 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲 , which can spell two different phonemes:
• → /oʊ/ as in flow
• → /aʊ/ as in flower

A helpful reminder for students is that 𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀, but it can also come before a single or , and occasionally inside a two-syllable word when the first syllable is stressed and the next begins with or (like tower and towel).
Try both sounds when reading a new word and choose the one that makes sense. It is a great built-in decoding strategy.
