Spring has sprung, and it’s time to be bear aware! 🐻
As the weather continues to warm, bears have emerged from their dens and begun searching for food after winter hibernation.
When bears regularly find food near people, they lose their fear of humans and their communities. When bears start to visit human communities consistently, it puts them at risk of relocation, trapping, or euthanasia. It’s also a safety risk for those living in bear-active areas.
Beyond hiking trails, hungry black bears may find themselves wandering through Calgary’s southwest foothills and river valleys in search of food.
You can help keep your neighbourhood bear aware by:
🐦 Removing bird feeders from your yard during bear season, and be aware of any fallen fruit on the ground from trees.
🗑️ Keeping your green and black collection carts secure and latched closed when not in use. Only put them out early on collection day.
👃 Regularly washing your collection carts with vinegar or ammonia to reduce food odours.
If you encounter a bear in your community, don’t panic, don't run, and for questions or concerns about a specific bear, call your nearest Alberta Fish and Wildlife office.
