Building an electric race bike from scratch comes with challenges.

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share our designs for the Tempest with industry professionals. Their real world experience and insight helped refine our approach, pushing us to think deeper and design better.

With this milestone complete, we are stepping into the fabrication phase and bringing this bike to life!

The motor controller is responsible for power output from the motor. It must be responsive and predictable in order to be effective. It takes raw rider inputs and translates them into controlled variables at the motor, all in real time. It is constantly calculating torque demands, adjusting outputs, and operating under constantly changing conditions. It is one of the most critical components in performance and control.

Our telemetry team plays a key role in how we understand and improve our bike. By collecting and analyzing real-time data from across the system, the team helps turn performance insights into smarter design decisions. Stay tuned as our telemetry team continues building and refining this season!

While disassembling the Zephyr we uncovered hidden logos and initials from past team members. They were tucked behind panels and inside components that were never meant to be seen, only remembered. Every part has a story and these subtle details are a reminder of the generations of student engineers who have contributed to this project.

The Zephyr was our first competitive electric race bike, active from 2014–2019, and debuting at the Utah Motorsports Campus in 2013. Built on a 2004 Suzuki GSX600R and powered by NMC Lithium-Ion batteries, Zephyr hit a top speed of 210 km/h. The Zephyr was a huge milestone that proved our team could transform a gas-powered frame into a high-performance electric racer.
