What to do when your toddler isn’t listening 😅

Toddlers are learning independence and sometimes that means they tune out instructions or say “no.” It’s normal, but there are strategies to help guide them effectively.

💛 Get Their Attention First
- Kneel to their level
- Make eye contact
- Use their name before giving instructions

💛 Keep Instructions Clear and Simple
- Short, one-step directions work best
- Example: Instead of “Pick up your toys, put your shoes on, and wash your hands,” try “Please put the blocks in the bin.”

💛 Offer Choices
- Toddlers respond well when they feel some control
- Example: “Do you want to wear the red shirt or the blue shirt?”

💛 Stay Calm and Consistent
- Avoid yelling or repeating instructions many times
- Gentle, consistent guidance teaches boundaries

💛 Use Positive Reinforcement
- Praise effort: “I see you picked up the blocks—great job!”
- Focus on what they do right rather than what they don’t

Remember: Listening skills take time to develop. Toddlers are exploring independence, testing limits, and learning to communicate. Patience and consistency are key.

You're not just dropping your child off at "class." You're in the circle with them.

You're singing the same songs, playing peekaboo, exploring the props together. That's intentional.

The research says the most powerful learning for little ones happens in connection with the adults they trust most, which means you're not just along for the ride. You're the whole point 💛

Right now it's crawling toward the cupboard for the fortieth time today, or dumping out every toy bin just to see what happens. It doesn't feel like "exploring" — it feels like exhausting 😅

But that instinct to investigate, to touch, to test, to ask "what if" — that's the same instinct that will carry them through school, curiosity, and eventually, the whole wide world.

Every week, we watch the same thing happen: a toddler hesitates at the door, then can't wait to get to the sensory table, the puppets, the sensory bins full of things to scoop, pour and discover. That instinct to explore is exactly what we're nurturing, one class at a time, because the kids who get to investigate freely now are the ones who stay curious for life 💛

It’s more than just a weekly play date, it’s a chance to develop the foundation for future learning.

How to help language development in your baby 🐣

Responding to sounds helps babies learn that communication is a back-and-forth interaction.

Try this:
💛 Repeat your baby’s sounds
💛 Smile and respond with words
💛 Maintain eye contact
💛 Pause to give your baby time to respond again

These “conversations” help babies build the foundation for language and social skills.
