This page has been created to build an online community for pre-service early childhood educators. You will find postings for U of Calgary ECEC PD sessions, relevant research and articles to our specialty field, information regarding Alberta PD sessions and conferences, and resources relevant to the education of young children in our province. This page is open to the public, but we hope to support our fellow U of C ECE classmates in any way possible.

We are happy to announce that registration for our first PD session of the year is open! Providing Essential Literacy Experiences for Young Learners:
Date and time: Thursday, January 27th, 2021 6:30 - 8:00 PM via Zoom
Who would benefit the most: All students, especially those whose teachable subject is Elementary and Early Childhood and English Language Arts
Description: This workshop will focus on the three key literacy learning experiences that strongly support children’s learning, especially during this time of the pandemic. Children have been impacted in a variety of ways, and in order to give them a solid literacy foundation despite loss of learning, teachers have tools to guide them. Within the workshop, we will examine some fundamentals of Guided Reading, look at two high-yield strategies for word work, and look closely at reading and writing elements to support early learners.
This workshop will be presented by Darla Wutzke who graduated from the University of Calgary Master of Teaching program in 2004, and has been teaching with the Calgary Board of Education for about 15 years. She has primarily taught Grades One and Two, and this year moved to Grade Three for a new experience. Her learning passions include early literacy and numeracy, which has consumed most of her professional development time.
Please note that a PD certification will be sent out following the workshop.
