🧠 ADHD & Procrastination: You’re Not Lazy — Your Brain May Need a Different Strategy 💛

For many people with ADHD, procrastination isn’t about a lack of care or motivation. It’s often connected to executive functioning challenges, overwhelm, time blindness, perfectionism, or difficulty initiating tasks.

If you struggle to get started, you’re not alone — and there are tools that can help.

✨ Tips for Managing ADHD Procrastination:

1️⃣ Starting Is the Hardest Part
The ADHD brain can struggle with task initiation. Try focusing on just the *first 2 minutes* instead of the entire task.

2️⃣ Break Tasks Into Small Steps
Smaller, clear steps reduce overwhelm and make progress feel more manageable.

3️⃣ Use Timers & Structured Schedules
Time-blocking, visual calendars, and short work sprints (like the Pomodoro Technique) can improve focus and momentum.

4️⃣ Use Visual Prioritization
Sticky notes, colour coding, checklists, or visual planners can help organize competing tasks.

5️⃣ Set Realistic Goals
Aim for progress — not perfection. Sustainable routines work better than unrealistic expectations.

6️⃣ Incorporate Rewards
The ADHD brain responds well to motivation and dopamine boosts. Celebrate completed tasks, even small ones.

7️⃣ Accountability Matters
Body doubling, check-ins, or external support can increase follow-through and reduce avoidance.

8️⃣ Remember to Ask for Help
You do not have to navigate ADHD alone. Support from a therapist can help you build practical tools, self-understanding, and compassionate coping strategies.

At Shelly Qualtieri & Associates, we have therapists who specialize in ADHD support and helping individuals manage procrastination, overwhelm, anxiety, and executive functioning challenges. 💙

You are not failing. Your brain may simply need a different approach.

TRIGGER WARNING

🧡 Talking about suicidal thoughts is hard — but important. 🧡

Suicidal ideation isn’t rare — many people experience thoughts of su***de at different points in life, yet stigma makes it difficult to talk about. A key step toward helping someone (or yourself) is recognizing potential warning signs and starting the conversation.

In our latest blog, we break down what suicidal ideation can look like, including:
🔹 Behaviour changes (like withdrawing, giving away prized items, or risky behaviours)
🔹 Shifts in sleep, appetite, or energy
🔹 Emotional experiences like hopelessness, sadness, or feeling trapped
🔹 Words or statements that suggest someone may be struggling inside 🌧️

Talking openly — even when it’s uncomfortable — can be one of the most protective things you do for someone who’s hurting.

➡️ Read more and learn how to recognize the signs here: [link to blog]

💛Disclaimer: Not everyone shows signs, and sometimes there may be no warning at all. If you’ve lost someone to su***de, please remember it’s never your fault for not noticing. 💛

If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
If there is no immediate danger but someone is struggling with suicidal thoughts, they can call or text 988 (Su***de Hotline in Canada).

🌩️ Understanding Anger Isn’t Weak — It’s Human

Anger isn’t something to suppress or be ashamed of — it’s a signal. A signal that something matters, that a boundary has been crossed, that unmet needs are trying to be heard. But when anger escalates without awareness, it can take over our body, mind, and relationships.

That’s why learning to navigate anger — not fight it or bury it — is such an important life skill.

💡 In our latest blog, we explore the Anger Escalation Scale — a tool therapists use to help people notice how their body and thoughts shift as anger grows, so they can choose intentional responses instead of reacting on autopilot.

Here’s what healthy anger navigation looks like:

✔️ Notice your early cues — tightening jaw, faster heart rate, negative thoughts
✔️ Check in with your body — tension, heat, breath holding?
✔️ Name what you’re feeling — “I’m frustrated… overwhelmed… unheard…”
✔️ Pause before reacting — breath, step back, ground
✔️ Choose your expression — assertive communication instead of explosion or shutdown

Learning to regulate anger isn’t about being “calm all the time” — it’s about strength, curiosity, and emotional skill.

Anger can become a teacher instead of a tyrant — if we know how to read it. 💛

🌿 Supporting Mental Health at Work 🌿

Our work lives play a big role in our overall well‑being — and prioritizing mental health at work isn’t just nice to have, it’s essential. 💼🧠

We recently shared some practical strategies and insights on how individuals and teams can create healthier, more supportive workplaces — whether you’re an employee, leader, or colleague.

✨ Here’s what matters most:

• Know that burnout is real: chronic stress at work doesn’t just affect productivity — it impacts emotional and physical health.
• Build psychological safety: workplaces where people feel heard, respected, and supported foster connection and resilience.
• Normalize conversations about stress: talking openly about well‑being reduces stigma and strengthens team trust.
• Access resources: employee assistance programs, mental health days, team check‑ins, and thoughtful boundaries make a difference.
• Practice daily support habits: active listening, checking in on teammates, and encouraging breaks are simple but powerful.

Good workplace mental health isn’t about perfection — it’s about awareness, communication, and compassion.

🖱️ Want practical tips and resources for your workplace well‑being? Read the full blog at shellyqualtieri.ca (link in bio).

You don’t have to navigate workplace stress alone — and a supportive environment benefits everyone. 💛
