Escaping the heat of an August day by exploring STEM foundations with youth grades 5 to 10 at the Friendship Centre. Extracting DNA from a strawberry, using pipettes to measure and mix, building circuits with various components, and coding and flying drones.

MindFuel was pleased to welcome ten young innovators, ages 12–15, to MindFuel for a week of hands-on STEM learning as part of the Ten Peaks Innovation Alliance Robotics & Entrepreneurship Summer Camps 2026!

Throughout the week, participants rolled up their sleeves and explored robotics, design thinking, innovation and entrepreneurship through real-world challenges, putting their creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply solutions to Food Scarcity and Insecurity.

A special thank you to Dagmar Knutson, Executive Director of Ten Peaks Innovation Alliance, for helping us kick off the camp and inspiring our young innovators as they began their week.

Participants had the opportunity to learn from Steve Schultz of Lacombe Composite High School, mentor to the renowned United Robotics of Lacombe team. Steve and his team brought their experience and enthusiasm for robotics into the camp, helping students explore how ideas can move from imagination to design, testing and real-world application.

It was a fantastic week of building, experimenting, collaborating and learning —and a great reminder of what can happen when young people are given the tools and encouragement to turn their ideas into action.

Thank you to Ten Peaks Innovation Alliance for partnering with MindFuel to create another memorable summer STEM experience. We can’t wait to see where these young innovators take their ideas next!

Hey, quick question, what would you do to "Cool the City" without an air conditioner --especially when the temperature hits 40°C+?

At Calgary Youth Central, young innovators took on our "Cool the City" Challenge and learned about human-centered design as they explored solutions to real-world problems.

But they didn’t just learn about these ideas. They became city planners, engineers, and problem solvers by ideating, building, and sharing their prototypes.

We’re always inspired by what happens when young people are empowered to create, problem-solve, and engineer for impact.

Congratulations to the Ten Peaks Innovation Alliance team on what sounds like an outstanding week in Red Deer! It's great to see these young campers all in on learning about robotics and coding.

We look forward to keeping that momentum going, when MindFuel welcomes Calgary and area students for our own Ten Peaks 'Bot Basics & Beyond' event (August 10-14) where our campers will explore coding, robotics, SMART farming, sustainability, and ag-tech in ways that’re fun, practical, and engaging.

What happens when you bring micro-pipettes, baking soda, strawberries, drones, and youth (and youth at heart) together on a hot summer afternoon? Lots of sharing of knowledge, learning from and with each other, and hands-on STEM fun!

In collaboration with the fantastic team at Indigesteam, we created colours using micro-pipettes for exact measurements, extracted DNA from strawberries, and designed colour changing prints through staging chemical reactions using red cabbage paint, baking soda, and vinegar.

To wrap up the day, we coded flight paths for drones to take off and land on different levels of a tower (aka open shelf,) which brought cheers and laughter from the successes and the crashes.

What good fun! We look forward to the next time.

Thank you to The Canadian Native Friendship Centre (CNFC) in Edmonton for the opportunity to do hands-on STEM activities together recently. And a special shout out to Corrine for organizing everything.

Students had fun exploring three different STEM fields in one afternoon: drones, smart circuits, and biotech. The youth participants not only flew drones using coding and built simple circuits with an input and output (one of which was loud – a buzzer!) but also used micro-pipettes to create colours and paint with them, and do a DNA extraction from a strawberry.

We look forward to the next time and going deeper into learning how to these STEM technologies at future workshops.
