Posted • Benzodiazepine is a pharmaceutical drug that is seeing an increased presence in the illicit market here in Canada. Normally used for sleeping disorders, seizure disorders or anxiety disorders benzodiazepines are being seen on the illicit market mixed with fentanyl. This is a worrying trend and benzodiazepines, and opioids significantly increase each others side effects and therefore significantly increase the risk of accidental substance poisoning.
The best way for us to curb this issue before it becomes another crisis would be the implementation of safer supply programs and drug-checking services. However, we can all assist in improving outcomes by becoming educated on what Benzodiazepines are, and this post is an introduction to that very topic.

Posted • .reduction.saves.lives We got word this morning that a second HUMAN BEING, in has died by extreme cold weather conditions… so in other words… THEY FROZE TO DEATH.
Our team at ANKORS & EKNPUD have been busy this morning trying to find solutions to keep our most vulnerable community members safe. We have been calling church’s to see if they would be willing to open their space to people who are living outside so they have a safe and warm place to be. But we haven’t had much luck, it just goes to voicemail. We have been calling for pricing on renting wall tents with heaters, but it’s $350/day for the tent and $75/day for the heater. We have left messages with and Mayor .
How many people have to die before the steps up? The death toll is at 2, possibly 3 and counting. That’s so f**ked….
If you are a person who is experiencing homelessness in Cranbrook, you can go to the emergency department at the hospital and let them know you are concerned about frost bite and want to see a doctor…. They legally can not kick you out. We have all the supporting documents stating so, and if you need an advocate, please reach out!
We need action NOW!! Cranbrook… step the f**k up and start caring for your community members… let’s remember the leading cause of homelessness is not drug use… it’s loss of a job… so let’s stop blaming, and start supporting before more people have to loose their lives because of a lack of political will in our community!!

Knowing what someone is going through can help you find the best way to respond to their emergency - AKA not wasting time or resources on Naloxone administration when other intervention will suffice, OR avoiding the chance of sending someone into precipitated withdrawal when it's not necessary to revive them.

Posted • Restorative justice is an approach to justice that seeks to repair harm by providing an opportunity for those harmed and those who take responsibility for the harm to communicate about and address their needs in the aftermath of a crime.
The five fundamental principals of restorative justice are relationship, respect, responsibility, repair, and reintegration.
The Calgary Youth Justice Committees seek to bring restorative justice to communities by:
- Listening to both victims and perpetrators of crime
- Finding unique and appropriate ways to bring reconciliation and make amends for the offence
- Giving youth a second chance after a bad decision
- Creating opportunities for the youth to connect to community in pro-social ways
- Supporting families of the youth as they navigate this process

Posted • Posted • Winnipeg just got Manitoba's first ever Overdose Prevention Site. Some folks have been asking, what's the difference between that and a Supervised Consumption Site? Well, read on!
SLIDE 1: What is the difference between an Overdose
Prevention Site and a Supervised Consumption Site?
SLIDE 2: An Overdose Prevention Site (OPS) is a place where people can use their own illicit drugs, access sterile harm reduction equipment, and receive emergency overdose response as needed.
Overdose Prevention Sites tend to be more basic in regard to size, capacity and resources and don’t have health professionals (such as nurses) on staff.
OPS are created in response to immediate need in the community.
SLIDE 3: A Supervised Consumption Site (SCS) provides all the services of an OPS but also offers additional services such as medical care, counselling and addiction treatment referral.
In addition to Peers (people with lived experience of drug use), SCS are staffed by credentialed professionals such as nurses and social workers.

Some folks lack consistent access to bathrooms, others put themselves at risk every time they use one. With the knowledge that people die in bathrooms every year, the University of Victoria has published a safer bathroom toolkit to help us make safer and better bathrooms for everyone.
