Serve and Return Matters

When children “serve” through sounds, words, gestures, or emotions, and adults “return” with warm, responsive interactions, healthy brain development is strengthened. Small everyday moments build connection, emotional safety, language, and resilience.

• Respond with eye contact, words, or comfort
• Follow the child’s lead and interests
• Pause, listen, and engage back
• Consistent connection helps children feel safe and supported
• Positive interactions build strong brain architecture

Today we had the opportunity to attend the Fluor Wellness Fair — a strong example of what it looks like when employers genuinely prioritize the health and wellbeing of their teams.

When organizations create space for education, connection, and access to wellness resources, it goes far beyond a one-day event — it builds a culture where people feel supported, safer, and valued.

We’re proud to be part of these conversations and to support workplaces that are investing in both physical and mental wellness for their employees.

Tips for Hiring a Nanny or Babysitter ✨

Finding the right caregiver for your family doesn’t have to be stressful! With a little planning and preparation, you can feel confident in your choice. Here’s how to make the process smoother:

💡 Plan Ahead:
Take time to check references and don't rush the interviews! Ask the questions you REALLY want to know; don't be shy as this is a critical step in safety and screening! Listen to your gut... how do you feel? Any red flag feelings should be listened too.

👩‍👧 Consider Your Options:
Choose a caregiver who fits your family’s needs. Do you need a live-in nanny, a part-time babysitter, or a shared arrangement? Identify the best type of caregiver for your family.

✅ Clarify Needs and Budget:
List your must-haves, like experience, first aid training and CPR, unique skills, personality traits, and the potential care giver's availability.

🎤 Conduct Thorough Interviews:
Ask detailed questions, verify ID, and trust your instincts. If something feels off, it’s okay to say no. And of course always have multiple interviews with your short list of potential caregivers! Check out our tips for hiring sheet on our website!

📋 Check References and Credentials:
Always review references, security clearances, and first aid certifications to ensure your candidate is well-qualified. Did you know you can ensure your nanny or caregiver is Red Cross certified in first aid through Child Safe Canada? Check us out online!

Taking the time to follow these steps can help you find a caregiver who feels like part of the family! For more helpful advice, head to the link in bio. 💙

🧠 Brain Development:
Bruce Perry explains that the brain is highly responsive to the environment, especially in early years. Positive, nurturing connections with caregivers promote healthy brain development, particularly in emotional regulation, social skills, and executive function.

💖 Emotional Regulation:
Supportive relationships teach children to manage emotions. Feeling safe and connected improves self-regulation, reducing anxiety and stress.

🏠 Safety and Security:
Perry emphasizes emotional and physical safety. Stable, supportive relationships help children feel secure, explore the world, and develop resilience. Disruptions in connections can affect emotional health and behavior.

🤝 Social Connections:
Secure attachments foster trust and teach positive interactions. Early social bonds lay the foundation for empathy, cooperation, and belonging.

📚 Cognitive and Academic Success:
Strong connections with adults like teachers and caregivers enhance learning and academic performance. Feeling supported encourages engagement and success.

🛡️ Resilience to Trauma:
In adversity, connectedness is protective. Perry notes that one stable, reliable adult can help children recover and build resilience over time.

In summary, Perry highlights the essential role of healthy, positive relationships in brain development, emotional well-being, and social skills. These connections foster safety, trust, and belonging, enabling children to thrive despite challenges.
