Aly Muhammad Salim, BHSc’23, a second-year neuroscience master’s student, is exploring new ways to improve recovery after concussion.
Recently, Aly took part in a fellowship at Harvard Medical School where he collaborated with leading experts in concussion epidemiology.
Under the mentorship of ’s Dr. Alexander Lohman, PhD, and Dr. Carlos Camara-Lemarroy, MD, Aly is studying Remote Ischemic Conditioning, a technique that briefly interrupts blood flow to a distant part of the body, such as an arm or leg, to enhance brain recovery post-injury.
“I wanted to explore the broader epidemiological aspects of concussion to better understand patterns, risks, and outcomes across populations,” says Aly. “This collaboration allowed me to bring home a more holistic understanding of concussion research.”
By applying epidemiological insights, Aly aims to shape prevention strategies and guide policy to reduce the societal impact of brain injury.
👏🏼 We look forward to seeing the impact of Aly’s neuroscience research!

Class of 2025: UCalgary health sciences grad driven to help those in need
Ryan Rahimi, BHSc’25, has always known he wanted to help others and work in a field that could lift people in need.
Inspired by his own life experience struggling with a speech impairment while growing up, and navigating his blended English-Farsi language, he connected with supports and mentors who helped him transition from struggling to confidently being able to express his words and feelings. That led to the Cu***ng School of Medicine’s Bachelor of Health Sciences program, beginning in 2021, and now convocation on June 3.
