2 punches 2KO’s!

Outnumbered but not outgunned!

It feels righteous. That’s precisely why we need to pause.

A man punches a bystander, starts to move away, and is knocked unconscious by the return punch. It’s easy to watch that and think, “Fair enough.” But our satisfaction with the outcome doesn’t answer the question: what threat remained when that punch was thrown?

There is a fading window of opportunity for a self-defence claim as a threat changes or recedes. Timing, movement and the circumstances matter. Being struck first doesn’t automatically make the response justified—but it doesn’t automatically make it wrong either.

The point is to assess the facts rather than let our emotional response decide the question. Understanding why someone reacted, agreeing with them, and establishing that their actions were justified are different things.

“Never bring a knife to a pole fight” makes for a good headline. The lesson in this clip is in the timing.

At first, the pole gives its holder distance and puts a barrier between him and the man with the knife. When he lowers it, that barrier disappears. The knife wielder sees the space and immediately presses forward.

Then a second person intervenes with a pole, striking the knife wielder. His focus was on the person in front of him; he appears to have missed the other person moving into the encounter.

Watch how quickly the circumstances change. The pole matters because of what it does in that moment. Lower it, and the opportunity changes. Add another person, and the whole encounter changes again.

Means, method and mindset are all visible here, but they have to be assessed as the situation unfolds. What was necessary a second ago may no longer be necessary once the threat has stopped. That is why we train people to recognise the when, not just practise the how.

BULLY GETS A REALITY CHECK.

There’s always a danger in assuming you’ve already decided how a confrontation is going to go.

You pick the person you think is vulnerable.
You apply pressure.
You expect compliance.

And then they don’t cooperate with the script.

In this Reality Check, I break down a confrontation where the apparent aggressor keeps pushing the situation — until the person on the receiving end decides enough is enough.

The interesting part isn’t simply the knockout.

It’s everything that happens before it.

Distance. Behaviour. Escalation. Opportunity. And the danger of mistaking somebody’s reluctance to fight for an inability to fight.

Sometimes the person walking away isn’t afraid of you.

Sometimes they’re giving you an opportunity you really should take.

JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN, DOESN’T MEAN YOU HAVE TO.

This viral clip is a really interesting example of use-of-force decision making.

A woman is confronting police armed with a shovel.

On paper, we can certainly construct circumstances where an edged or impact weapon like this could present a threat capable of causing death or grievous bodily harm — and where lethal force could therefore potentially be justified.

But that's not what happens here.

The officers talk to her.

They maintain distance.

When she starts smashing the police car with the shovel, they don't suddenly treat damage to property as justification for escalating the force used against her.

Instead, they continue managing the situation until one officer sees an opportunity, moves in and disarms her.

And I think there's an important lesson in that.

The fact that a level of force might be legally available doesn't mean it must be used.

Equally, the fact that these officers successfully resolved this incident without lethal force doesn't prove that lethal force would never have been justified had her behaviour changed.

Circumstances matter.

Behaviour matters.

Timing matters.

Authority gives you options. Judgement determines which one you use.

That's the Reality Check.

BJJ DOESN’T WORK IN THE STREET… RIGHT?

This is one of the better examples I’ve seen of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu being used in a real confrontation — and not for the reason you might expect.

The BJJ guy gets the dominant position.

He has control.

And then, instead of using that position to punish the other guy, he talks him down.

That matters.

Because sometimes physical control and de-escalation aren't opposites. Getting into a position where the other person can no longer effectively hurt you may be exactly what creates the opportunity to communicate.

He doesn't need to prove he can fight.

At this point, he's already proved it.

Control gives him options — and he chooses the better one.

That’s a Reality Check worth talking about.

One bad decision.

Whatever happened before this clip, there is a moment when a near miss and a burst of temper become something else entirely.

The skateboard is raised. Property is damaged. Violence is invited. And suddenly, a brief encounter that could have ended is now escalating—with consequences that may last far longer than the anger that caused them.

Self-protection isn’t only about what we can do to somebody else. Sometimes it’s about recognising what our own anger is about to make us do.

Pause.

That may be the most important technique you ever practise.

TEXTBOOK TAKEDOWN.

It’s easy to critique police use of force from the comfort of a screen.

Sometimes, though, it’s worth pointing out when officers get it absolutely right.

This Calgary incident is a great example of coordinated officers dealing with an actively resistant subject: communication, positioning, control and a takedown that looks remarkably like the sort of thing we demonstrate in training.

No flashy techniques. No unnecessary drama.

Just simple principles, applied effectively under pressure.

Here’s my Reality Check on what they did — and why it worked.
