Many students think better writing is only about grammar, spelling, or vocabulary.
But there’s another skill that makes a huge difference in essay scores:
Cohesion.
Cohesion is what helps writing flow.
It connects one sentence to the next, one paragraph to another, and one idea to the overall argument.
Without it, even a student with good grammar and strong ideas can lose marks because the essay feels disconnected.
Here are 3 simple ways students can improve cohesion:
✅ Pronoun chains
Keep referring clearly to the same subject.
Example: The character… he… his decision…
✅ Lexical chains
Use related words throughout your essay to build depth.
Example: power, authority, control, dominance
✅ Discourse markers
Guide the reader with phrases like:
Furthermore, In contrast, This suggests, As a result
