Thursday Theory or Thought
Today I thought I'd go with theory.
I talked about the 8 limbs of yoga, WAY back before Christmas. The Yamas are one of those 8 limbs.
What the heck are YAMAS??? They are the social restraint and moral codes of yoga. And there ar 5 of them. Let me explain a little more...
1. Non Violence (Ahimsa); or avoiding thoughts or actions that may harm others including nature. In otherwords treat yourself, others, and the world around you with kindness.
2. Non Stealing (Asteya) This goes beyond stealing of material items - it also is about not stealing from the environment and yourself. Be mindful of your consumption of natural resources, as well as the unauthorized appropriation of ideas and culture. Not to mention time you may be stealing from yourself and the things you actually want to spend time on.
3. Truthfulness (Satya): in words, thoughts, and actions. Beware of what you're saying to yourself internally, as well as what you tell the world. Say what you mean, mean what you say. But be honest with yourself, without judgement.
4. Non Possessiveness (Aparigraha): of material goods and people. Let go of expectations and attachments. Let go of jealousy. Let go of any expectation you have for "how a pose is supposed to be."
5. Fidelity/Celibacy (Brahmacharya): conservation of energy or moderation. Rest when you need rest. Find ways to relax and recharge, so you have the energy you need for the things that are important to you.
