Teaching isn't only lesson plans and behavior strategies.
Sometimes it’s about showing students you’re willing to step into their world — even if that means putting on a costume.
Moments like these help students see us as approachable and safe. When students feel that connection, it can strengthen classroom culture and reduce many of the behaviors we struggle with day to day.
So when there is a special day… put on the costume! And enjoy those moments with your students.

I used to love playing “teacher.” My sisters, my friends, even my parents — everyone had to participate.
When I started university, I was confident I would teach 1st grade and spend my career in one classroom.
During my program, my advisor asked if I wanted to add special education as a dual major since it required the same number of credits. I said, “Sure.” That decision changed the direction of my career.
The more I worked in special education, the more I found myself wanting to understand behavior. I’m the person who runs TOWARD the child throwing the chair, not away.
Completing my Master’s in Special Education showed me how much we misunderstand behavior and how small shifts in expectations and response can significantly influence outcomes.
The Specialized Teacher was created to give educators and families the tools to respond to behavior effectively, not reactively.

What an incredible experience presenting at Calgary City Teachers’ Convention today! I’m so grateful I could talk about behavior and meet some lovely educators 👋🏻
My two sessions were:
➜ Let’s Talk Consequences (It’s Not a Dirty Word)
➜ Stop Guessing, Start Tracking: Using Data to Transform Behavior
If you attended, what was your favorite part? ⭐️
