How to Become a Teacher in Alberta (for Internationally Educated Teachers):

1️⃣ Hold a recognized teaching degree
You must have a minimum of 4 years of university-level education (including a teacher preparation program and supervised practicum) from an accredited post-secondary institution outside Canada.

2️⃣ Gather your documents
You’ll need to prepare and upload:
• Official transcripts (sent directly from your university)
• Degree certificates
• Proof of identity (passport, PR card, etc.)
• Criminal record and vulnerable sector check
• Statement of professional standing (if you were licensed in another country)
• Proof of English (or French) language proficiency, if your education was not in one of those languages.

3️⃣ Set up a TWINS (Teacher Workforce Information System) account
Create an account on the Alberta Education portal to apply for teacher certification.

4️⃣ Apply for certification
Submit your Application for Teacher Certification online through TWINS and pay the non-refundable fee.

5️⃣ Assessment of your credentials
Alberta Education will evaluate your international education to determine if it’s comparable to Alberta standards.
This may include verifying:
• The length and structure of your program
• Whether it included supervised teaching experience
• Accreditation of your institution.

6️⃣ Processing time
Applications from outside Canada typically take up to 120 business days once all documents are received.

7️⃣ Receive your Interim Professional Certificate
If approved, you’ll be granted an Interim Professional Certificate, allowing you to teach in Alberta for up to 3 years while gaining local experience.

8️⃣ Work toward your Permanent Professional Certificate
After about 400 teaching days in Alberta schools and two successful evaluations meeting the Teaching Quality Standard, your employer can recommend you for permanent certification.

9️⃣ Receive your Permanent Certificate
Once approved, your certification does not expire, even if you leave the profession or province for a while.
