Someone is going to tell you not to go outside…. It’s very important you don’t listen to them.
Society tells us that when the clouds roll in and the rain starts pouring, it’s time to head indoors. But in the world of Forest School, we know a secret: there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.
When we let kids splash in puddles, squish mud between their fingers, and embrace the rainy days, we aren’t just letting them get messy—we are fueling their development.
Why is “Bad Weather” is the Best Weather?
We learn Resilience & Adaptability: Learning to find joy in the rain builds mentally tough, adaptable kids who don’t let a little discomfort stop them.
It’s a Sensory Rich Environment: Mud and rain provide a goldmine of tactile feedback that indoor toys simply cannot replicate.
Boosted Immunity: Exposure to diverse microbes in natural soil (like Mycobacterium vaccae) has been shown to improve mood and strengthen immune systems.
Unmatched Creativity: A puddle isn’t just water; it’s an ocean, a chemistry lab, and a cooking pot for mud pies.
Forest school isn’t just a luxury for sunny days. It’s a philosophy that teaches children to thrive in every season of life. So put on the waterproofs, lace up the boots, and let them play!
Even I got wet and muddy today!
