Meet Clara: The little artist behind RainbowKeys 🎨✨🎹

Many people are pleasantly surprised to hear that my own daughter Clara is the illustrator of my RainbowKeys books. I’d love to take you on Clara’s creative journey through the years, because before she became my illustrator…she was just a little girl who loved to create. And yes, I am having a HUGE proud mama moment! 🥹

There has always been a lot of creativity in our home. Music, dance, painting, crochet, clay, Lego, sand castles…creativity has always been woven through our family life. 🖌️

And Clara? She has ALWAYS been an artist. When she was little, she refused to use colouring books because she wanted to draw her own picture first… and THEN colour it in. Looking back, that little detail feels very fitting! 😆

I understand her creative spark because I had it too. I spent a huge part of my childhood with a crayon or sketchbook in my hand, usually tucked away in a quiet corner somewhere. With three siblings and a very busy house, drawing became a little bit of peace in my day. It was a way to express myself and get lost in something creative. I loved black-and-white sketches, making posters and collages, colouring and painting. I even used to bring my art supplies along to hockey games so I could draw while I watched my brothers play. 🥰

I was pretty good…but Clara is AMAZING. Her ability to draw from her imagination without even looking at a reference image is incredible. And she is fearless when it comes to trying new mediums: pencil, paint, watercolour, crochet, clay and so much more. Then, in 2023, we discovered Procreate. I had been noticing the beautiful digital artwork being created by illustrators for children’s books, so I downloaded the app and ordered a pencil for the iPad. And that was the beginning of Clara’s journey as a digital artist! ✨

Today, she follows online tutorials to learn new skills and techniques in Procreate, while continuing to explore all kinds of creative projects. And I especially love seeing how much her love for animals comes through in her artwork. 🐶🐱

And she has become my very own “in-home illustrator.” Clara has illustrated my RainbowKeys books throughout the years, and getting to watch her artwork grow and evolve alongside the books has been one of the most special parts of creating them. I love that these books are a labour of love between me and my daughter! 🙏

It also feels important to me that her creativity is nurtured. A portion of my Rainbow Keys book proceeds goes directly back to Clara in the form of art supplies and education. We’ve purchased digital Procreate tutorials from other artists, and right now, we’re saving up for a special iPad where she can gather all of her artwork together in one place. We’re reinvesting in her education, her creativity and something that brings her so much joy. ❤️

I love that Rainbow Keys has become more than just a collection of music books. It has become a little piece of our family story…and Clara’s artwork is such a special part of it. 😊

A new JoyMakers class is now open! ✨🎹🙌

I have a little fall registration update for you! I’ve opened up Wednesday at 9:00 AM as a Mixed Ages JoyMakers class, which means another opportunity for your little one to join us for a fun-filled 45 minutes of singing, dancing, instruments, movement, stories, sensory play, and lots of musical connection. 🌈🎵

I’m so excited to officially join the Airdrie Regional Chamber of Commerce! 💛🎹✨

Thank you so much to the Airdrie Regional Chamber of Commerce for your recent, incredibly warm welcome on your social media accounts and for taking the time to share a little bit of my story. It means more than you know! 🥹

I’ve attended Chamber events over the years, and it’s actually pretty emotional to look back and remember just how much they’ve been a part of my journey, and how that strong foundation helped me build over the years. The very first event I attended helped me build a business plan before I opened B Sharp Music Studio. I also remember sitting in a big comfy chair in the boardroom at the City of Airdrie, where I opened my very first social media accounts and signed up for LinkedIn. 😆

Fast forward 11 years, and it’s incredible to see how far my dreams have come. What started as a passion for teaching music has grown into books, videos, resources, programs and so many exciting projects that I never could have imagined back then. 🙏

As my children have grown, I’ve been able to pour even more time and energy into my business and into my passion for early childhood music education. And with that growth has come a whole new focus on learning, scaling and building a strong foundation for the future. 🙌

One of the biggest things I’ve learned lately is that I don’t have to do it all myself. There is so much value in leaning on people with different expertise, experiences and passions, and bringing the right people alongside you can make such a difference. ✨

I’m really looking forward to making the most of my Chamber membership, meeting more like-minded business owners and continuing to build connections within the Airdrie community. And to be nominated for an Airdrie Regional Business Award along the way? What an honour. 🥹

One of my favourite things about teaching music to young children is knowing that we’re building so much more than musical skills. When children sing, clap, dance, play instruments and experiment with rhythm, they’re also developing skills that support them far beyond the music room. 🎶

✨ Music supports early brain development: helping little minds make connections between sounds, patterns and language.

🗣️ Music supports communication and language: through singing, rhyming, repetition and learning new words.

🧠 Music builds memory and cognitive skills: remembering songs, sequences, rhythms and patterns gives little brains a fun workout.

🤝 Music encourages social-emotional development: children learn to take turns, listen to others, express themselves and participate as part of a group.

💃 Music supports physical development: from dancing and moving to keeping a beat, music encourages coordination and body awareness.

❤️ And perhaps most importantly…music creates connection. It gives children a way to express themselves, be creative, feel successful and experience joy.
